Obituary For Kurt Daniel Shafer

Our beloved son, Kurt Daniel Shafer, passed away on May 5th, at the age of 35 years. He loved playing with his four year old daughter more than anything else. He was her horse when she was a princess; her tractor driver when she wanted to go to the pond; and her companion down the playground slides. His heart was big.

Kurt owned a pressure washing and painting business with which he struggled in a poor economy and poor health.

He is survived by his parents, Peter and Barbara Shafer; his daughter, Nadia; brother, Jeffrey Shafer and sister-in-law, Nicole Shafer; and his niece, Lea Shafer; nephew, Evan Shafer; and five cousins; also two very loving friends who helped him through tough times, Sarah Mace and Bryna Emery.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations can be made to The Healing Place of Wake County, 1251 Goode Street, Raleigh, NC 27603

Kurt was a great friend to those who spent time with him. Many great memories from High School with him. I'll always remember his smile and kind heart. Praying for peace for Barbara and Peter and his beautiful daughter.

I have two favorite memories, one of a beautiful red head little guy on the playground at Emerson Park and the proud and happy dad with his own little red head. Rest in peace sweet boy

From his likening rolls of hay in the fields to Mr. Snuffleupagus, to his hosting our trip to visit when Peter was hospitalized, Kurt always had such humor and spirit. My heart breaks for him, and my love goes out to my brother Peter and dear Barbara. Nadia is a marvelous little girl and a fond reminder of Kurt.

We, the redheaded cousins, had too little time together, Kurt. Though I remember fondly our first trip to visit you in Raleigh and lighting sparklers in the backyard, I was always too young for and usually but a spectator and wannabe tag-along to your merry mischief-making with our older siblings. How I wish we could sit together now and watch our children play like we all once did. I am brokenhearted that you are gone but delighted to know that another little redhead, undoubtedly brilliant and witty and genuinely kind because she's yours, will grow up knowing the love of our wonderful family and the father she lost too soon. We will miss you.

As my heart breaks for Barbara and Peter and Nadia so grows my resolve to share my affection for my dear cousin and the stories of camping and fishing and car rides and purple cow milkshakes and "sledding" down a cornfield so slowly we could have run faster... with his beloved Nadia. My love and sympathy...

My heart and mind are with my aunt, uncle, cousin Jeff and his beautiful family, and precious Nadia. Kurt has a unique and wonderful spirit that will be missed so greatly. His clever mind, sensitive heart, and big smile were so endearing. Getting to meet the beautiful Nadia recently was such a joy, what a wonderful little person. She will always carry with her the fun-loving spirit and the love of her father.
