Obituary For Katelyn Shea Butts

Katelyn (Katy) Shea Butts, 30, of Raleigh, NC, passed away on October 3, 2021 at home with her family by her side after a courageous battle with breast cancer.

Katy was born in Fairfield, CT, attended Roger Sherman Elementary School, Tomlinson Middle School and was a 2008 graduate of Fairfield Ludlowe High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance at Loyola University’s Sellinger School of Business and Management in Baltimore, MD, where she met the love of her life, “her person”, Davis Butts.

Katy & Davis were married on May 20, 2017 at Castle Hill Inn in Newport, RI in a storybook wedding. They moved to Raleigh, NC with their good fur boy, Otis, where they established their home and careers. Together, they shared many wonderful adventures and much love.

Katy, known to all as Katyshea, had a beautiful, infectious smile and laugh that would light up a room. She was smart, generous of heart, and kind. Katy was funny with a wicked sense of humor.

Katy was an athlete and had a passion for all sports. She would surprise most people with her extensive knowledge of all NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA, MLL (the list goes on) teams, players and stats. She could “talk the talk.” Katy enjoyed watching Jeopardy or a good documentary, relished a jammy egg or a hard roll with butter, loved John Mayer’s music and admired and respected Derek Jeter. Katy was passionate about the NY Yankees and, above all, her family and friends.

Katy battled her cancer with the courage and never-ending spirit that always defined her but never changed her.

Katy was the beloved wife of Davis W. Butts, cherished daughter of John & Susan Shea, favorite sister of Jonathan and Amanda Shea, daughter-in-law of Tom & Betsy Butts, sister-in-law of Jeff & Caroline Butts and Katherine Butts, and aunt of Forrest and Willow. She is also survived by uncles, aunts, cousins and the many friends who touched her life and supported her throughout her illness.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Katy’s memory to the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation/William Raveis Ride & Walk or The Jimmy Fund . If you are able to, please consider donating blood or blood platelets with the American Red Cross or your local hospital.

Katy’s family is especially grateful to Dr. Lisa Carey, Dr. Danielle File and their team and the NSICU staff at the UNC Cancer Hospital, who lovingly and respectfully cared for Katy. Services will be private.

Katy and I worked together at FactSet. My fondest memory is when I brought in my 2.5 year old daughter, Catie, to work. They bonded immediately and I have a lovely photo and video of them playing. Please let me know if you would like them. She was a light for all.

Katy was an amazing person and friend. She loved her family, including Otis, more than anything! I'll miss her smile, laughs, jokes, love of "her people", all sports facts, our lunch dates, love of bread, and sincere care for others. Sue, John, Davis, Jon, Amanda, and the rest of the family- I'm thinking about you all daily and send my condolences.
