Obituary For Judith K Stevenson

Surrounded by her cherished family, Judith "Judy" Stevenson joined her merciful Lord on May 20, 2016 at her home.

She is survived by her daughter, Jeannette "Jnet" Stevenson, her son, John "Jack" G. Stevenson Jr.(Lisa Parker), granddaughter, Katelyn Stevenson Di Modugno (Vincent) and her cousins Mary Ann Bauman (Paul), Harry Graham (Patricia), Mary Graham Strong, and Katherine Graham Marsh (Phillip).

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John G. Stevenson. She was the daughter of the late Paul A. and Helen C. (Walsh) Kearney, and sister to the late Paul J. Kearney.

Judy was born June 25, 1944 in Paterson, New Jersey and was a 1961 graduate of Immaculate Conception High School. She and John were married in New Jersey in 1967, and were subsequently relocated to Raleigh in 1972 by IBM. Judy and John were avid sailors, having a second home in New Bern for a number of years, which Judy moved to from 2000 - 2005. Judy retired from American Airlines in 2000 , having held positions in the areas of Executive Service, Reservations, and Flight Operations Support. After returning to Raleigh in 2005, she worked briefly at In His Name book store and volunteered at Rex Hospital.

Judy was not afraid of challenging herself physically and walked a Marathon on Kiawah Island in 1999. She was also an avid world traveler; visiting Italy, Ireland, Russia, Egypt, and the Holy Land more than once.

She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church where she was active in multiple ministries over the years. In 2005 she was commissioned by Bishop Gossman as an Advocate in the Tribunal of the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh. In recognition of her strong faith in Christ and her dedication to serving Him, Judy was nominated to and accepted Investiture as a Lady of the Equestrian Order of The Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, which supports the Christian shrines and schools in the Holy Lands.

Judy will be missed by all of those who love her. She will be remembered for her love, strong faith, indomitable spirit and a smile that welcomed, reassured - and frequently led to shared laughter.

The family will receive friends on June 4, 2016 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church (2718 Overbrook Dr, Raleigh, NC 27608.) Visitation: 10am - 11:15, Funeral Mass: 11:30 with burial in columbarium and celebration of life to follow.

In lieu of flowers, The family requests that Memorial Donations be made to Transitions (Hospice of Wake county) http://transitionslifecare.org/donate/

We went with Judy on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land a few years ago. She was always smiling and making everyone feel loved. But most importantly her faith was a light for our journey. I will pray to and for her often.

Although I have known Judy for many years at OLL, we became closer friends when she was a volunteer in Rex Hospital's PPC department were I worked. We all loved here smile and enthusiasm and uplifting spirit. She easily became "one of us". My sincere sympathy to the family she loved. She was a lovely, faith filled friend who now rests with the Father but her spirit remains with us. Emily Mattscheck

Judy was a client of mine. I worked on her computers. I loved just being around her. She had such an amazing attitude about life. And her smile was contagious. I'll miss that smile and her wonderful laugh...and the smell of cookies baking that she always seemed to be making for her grandkids. You'll be missed, Judy. My prayers are with all of her family. - Cynthia Thomas

In 1999, Judy and I were walking buddies when we both participated in the Kiawah Island Marathon to raise money for the Leukemia Society. We walked 26.2 miles side by side, My husband and her trainer Rufus was participating in the same event. When Rufus was in the hospital last year, Judy came to visit, and she looked just like in the picture with her bright smile and upbeat personality even though she knew that her illness was very serious. Rufus went before her to where she is now. I hope that they are both in a beautiful place, and if there is a gym in heaven, Rufus may well be training Judy again. I loved knowing Judy, and I am so very sorry for your loss. Karin Singleton, Raleigh, NC

My condolences as you mourn the loss of this beautiful woman. I had the privilege of knowing her for over 20 years and always found her to be a ray of sunshine, a good listener, and a very faith-filled person. I will miss her tremendously. I regret that obligations in DC will prevent me from attending her funeral. I will celebrate Mass for the happy repose of her soul that day. Msgr. Michael Clay
