Joyce Reams Shannon, age 89, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of music, kindness and faith. Born in Richmond, Virginia, Joyce brought warmth to every chapter of her life and to her beloved community in Raleigh.

In her early career, Joyce worked in the nuclear power department at General Electric on Capitol Hill. During that time, she met many esteemed figures in Washington, but it was her grace, intellect, and gentle presence that made a lasting impression on those around her.

After moving to Raleigh in 1974, Joyce worked for the Wake County Public School system at Project Enlightenment, where she helped screen children under 6 years old for learning disabilities.

She devoted herself wholeheartedly to her family as a homemaker, creating a loving and faith-filled home. She volunteered countless hours at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, where she was a devoted parishioner. Joyce also served as President of Our Lady of Lourdes home/school association, as well as serving on the parish council and singing in the church choir – places where her love of children, music, and her Catholic faith could truly shine. Joyce also shared her voice as a proud member of the Raleigh Oratorio Society, cherishing the joy that music brought to others.

Known for her beautiful presence and gentle spirit, Joyce had a gift for making people smile. She was especially known for offering strawberry hard candies to those around her – a small gesture she believed could brighten someone’s day.

Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, Joseph, who passed away in 2016. She is survived by her loving son, Burke Shannon (Shawna), and her cherished granddaughter, Zoë Elizabeth Shannon (Kipp).

Her life was one of service, joy, and compassion—a beautiful presence that touched many. She will be remembered always for her faith, her voice, and the way she brought light into the lives of others.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Raleigh on Friday, May 2nd, 2025 at 12:00pm. The Rite of Committal will take place immediately following the Mass in the Columbarium at Our Lady of Lourdes.
