Obituary For Jonathan Patrick Hill

Jonathan Patrick Hill, age 43, passed away peacefully, yet unexpectedly, on December 5, 2014, in San Diego, California.

Jonathan is survived by his loving wife, Heather Marie Hill, and their three children, Sarah Grace Hill, Andrew James Hill and Nicholas Frederick Hill, all of Raleigh, North Carolina; his parents, Bronwyn Hooper and Dorrance Hill of Durham; his brother, Joshua Hill, and sister-in-law, Anna Bilowus, and their three children, Maddie, Sophie and Max, of Westport, Connecticut; his father- and mother-in-law Frederick and Kay Larson of Canton, Ohio; and father-in-law David Campbell of Canton, Ohio; and his “wingman,” Ismael Obaydi, and his wife, Janelle, and their son, Lateef, and a future son, of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Jonathan was born on September 27, 1971 on Martha’s Vineyard and completed his training as a pilot with Embry-Riddle and Airman Flight School in Norman Oklahoma. He served for 8 years as a pilot for JetBlue Airways Corporation. Although he flew around the globe and traveled to many different places, his favorite destination was his home, where he so treasured his dual role as a loving husband to Heather and beloved father to Sarah, Andrew and Nicholas.

The following words were written in honor of Jonathan by family friend Kimberly Rex: "It’s hard to accept Jon won't be there anymore but memories are forever. We all have them. It's easy to describe the kind of guy Jon was through my eyes. He was the guy who would tell you like it is when you were down but then offer his hand to help you up. He was the guy standing next to you asking the questions you only think to ask but don't. He was the guy who wouldn't take crap from anyone without challenging you why. In my perception, he was the boy next door — the man young girls dream about meeting one day and marrying to start a family. I envy Heather, for she had it all. I've loved watching the Hill family grow. From seeing Jon get up before anyone to change his baby girl’s diaper, to getting her dressed and then showing her off at the coffee shop, to even buying her first training bra. Yes, that was the kind of DAD he was. He LOVED his children and his wife. After Andrew was born, Heather was not herself. Jon, being the caring husband, called me and flew me down to be with her and the new baby. He did this for her...and to help her out while he went back to work. I was there when Nicholas arrived. I watched Sarah and Andrew with Grandma and then took them to the hospital shortly after he was born. Heather was exhausted, Jon with a smile holding Nicholas, Grandma so proud, Sarah and Andrew anxious to see their brother. It was a beautiful moment to witness, one I hold dearly. Now I'm deeply sorry for Heather that a part of the dream is gone. Jon was a really great guy. I know he would be hugging us all telling us everything's going to be OK and that he's OK ... But it's not. Not right now. Maybe later. Much later.”

Last winter, during one of the bad snow storms, my husband was stranded in Durham after his car got stuck. Jon offered to go pick him up and bring him home to North Raleigh so my toddler and I wouldn't have to worry about him. However, once he picked my husband up, he brought my husband back to his car and helped him dig it out. He followed him until he got safely onto the main roads. Our family was humbled and grateful that someone we hardly knew (at the time), was willing to risk his own safety to help us. Thank you, and may you rest in God's peace. Bethany Thuku

I've flown with Jonathan on several occasions; if Jonathan was on your Trip Pairing, you were in for an easy and enjoyable trip! His genuine smile was certainly infectious. Often I would see Jonathan in the Crew Lounge, always with that subtle grin on his face, and we would share a brief conversation. He will certainly be missed by me and all of us at JetBlue. Captain Curtis Kikkert, JetBlue.

Mrs. Hill, I am very sorry for your loss. I had the opportunity of meeting your husband when Andrew was in my class last year. I could tell the kind of father he was. My daughter Luna is in class with Andrew this year, and surely misses him in class and is very sad. My prayers and thoughts are with your family. Michele Dyroff

Jon was the only person to give up his seat on a commute for me in 12 years of aviation. Always a pleasure to spend a little bit of time with you on the way up to NY. Ill miss seeing you there. Thanks Jon

I had the privilege of flying with Jon for about two years. This was one of the most memorable experiences of my 20 year flying career. Jon was a brilliant teacher, friend, and an shining example of how to treat others. I will miss Jon more than words can explain! - Chase Trissel

I worked with Jonathan years ago at Piedmont Aviation. He was one of the most fun guys to work with, he always kept everybody laughing. He will be missed. I'm saying extra prayers for his family. High Flight Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth, And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds, --and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of --Wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air... Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark or even eagle flew -- And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God. Jon was one of the kindest people I've ever met with the sweetest smile and the best giggle .There is nothing he wouldn't have done to help you . I remember him taking days off work (on his own accord) to put endless shelves together, hang up pictures, and paint my new school and he wouldn't put the paint brush down until he had finished. He never expected anything in return except a smile and/or a hug. His patience and kindness shone through constantly even when he taught my son to drive stick shift and he banned me from the car ! He was such a special person and he will always be in my heart . I am so thankful you were a part of my life . Sleep tight xxxx

To the family of Jonathan, I want to extend my sympathy on the passing of Jonathan, though I only new him for a short period of time I know he was a wonderful man to all he came in contact with and one who loved his family and flying. May The Lord give you the strength in dealing with his passing and his absence as you find a way to keep on keeping on. Captain Wiley Shearin Us Airways.

I worked with Jon at Piedmont Aviation many years ago at RDU. We both went to Embry Riddle and had a lot in common. We were both helping a person who owned a plane at RDU and we would fly together once in a while during the early years of our careers. Jon always brought a smile to my face. His personality was infectious , and although I had not seen him in years, I thought of him often and our adventures and they always make me laugh. RIP JON. Pete Kissel 919 247 8899
