Obituary For Jonathan Michael Roberts

It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of our beloved son, Jonathan. Jonathan Michael Roberts passed away at home on October 15, 2021, surrounded by loving family and friends. Jonathan was born on March 15, 2004, to parents David and Leslie Roberts, in Durham, North Carolina.

Jonathan defined unconditional love, which was given and received in absolute abundance. He shared his life and shared in the lives of all those around him. Wherever he went, everyone knew his name and wanted to be near him. The world brightened by his joy and infectious laugh (being quite the comedian and trickster, himself).

Jonathan inspired others with his courage, for no matter the challenge, it was met with strength and determination, to be fought every step of the way and never alone. He was constantly surrounded by those who loved him. His brother Jeremy, his hero and best friend, happily put Jonathan’s needs before his own. His therapists and teachers helped him do the work he needed to do and gave him every opportunity to learn. His prayer warriors and friends surrounded him with love and support. His nurses were instrumental in both his care and increasing his quality of life. Finally, he and his family were never without God.

Jonathan’s favorite things were sitting next to his dad to watch monster trucks, racing, and superhero movies; listening to music, singing, and having dance parties with his mom; nature and being outside, going for walks and bike rides, or just sitting on the porch listening to the birds and watching the lizards; reading books and playing games and going to school.

Jonathan was preceded in death by his great-grandparents and his paternal grandfather, David Roberts. He is survived by his parents, David and Leslie; brother, Jeremy; his grandparents, Jeanette and David Messier and Fran Roberts; and aunts, uncle and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held at North Raleigh United Methodist Church, 8501 Honeycutt Road in Raleigh on Saturday, October 23rd at 1:00 pm with a Viewing and Visitation from 12:00 until 12:45. The family encourages all those who knew Jonathan to attend to share memories and celebrate his life.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jonathan’s memory to Transitions LifeCare and designate it to Transitions Kids Fund. Transitions LifeCare, Philanthropy Department, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607; transitionslifecare.org/donate.

Our prayers and thoughts and prayers are with Jonathan and his wonderful family. I know Dave and Jeanette from church and we talked about Jonathan often. My wife and I continue our prayers and I know our church will as well. We are thankful to have shared Jonathan's life through Dave and Jeanette's eyes and share the love, loss and new hope for shared tomorrows with Jonathan. Blessings to all. Thanks Jonathan for sharing your life with us. Greg & Terilyn Johnson - OD Church Family

I had the honor of being J's PT for 17 years. He loved being outside watching the school buses go by while working on walking. He let me know when I pushed too hard, but always tried his best . I love you dearly J and will miss you immensely. Xoxo Ms.T.R.

I was Jonathan's teacher at Brassfield Elementary for 5 years. When he came to school in kindergarten he was the funniest kid we'd seen. He crawled around the room causing troubled everywhere he went. We even got him to walk a few steps! He talked quite a bit, saying things like, "call my mama." Near the election of 2008 he began saying "Obama" and "Obama Mama". What a shock to find out his parents didn't support Obama. He was just such a joy to have in the classroom. I thank God everyday for the blessings Jonathan bestowed on my life! Katherine Eatmon
