Obituary For John "Mike" Michael Burke

John Michael “Mike” Burke, age 79. Beloved partner of Brenda Hopper. Loving father of Cale, Colin (Cherise), Amy (Curtis), and Carrie Winters. Dear Papa of Alexandra, Austin, Ella, and Ciaran. Favorite Uncle to many Burke nieces and nephews, spread across the United States. Doting pet dad to Franklin and the late Charlie.

Born in Springfield, Ohio, Mike was a proud graduate of The Ohio State University and carried a buckeye in his pocket every day. Also in his pocket was the ever-present blue felt-tip pen, which he used for everything, including drawing “scars” on unsuspecting children of all ages. After working in the automotive industry for his entire career, Mike retired from Chrysler Motors Corporation after more than 25 years of service as an executive, spending most of his professional life in Detroit, Michigan. He was an active member of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) for five decades, holding many regional, divisional, and national leadership roles, and never met a stranger. True to his proud Irish heritage, he had the gift of gab and when combined with his passions for people and grassroots motorsports, he was a teacher and mentor first. He liked to win, but he thrived in coaching others to win, too!

In retirement, Mike adopted the city of Asheville as his home. After arriving in North Carolina, he volunteered his time to serve as the Chair of the Civic Center Commission, and was a founder and leader of the Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission. An avid runner and animal lover, he notoriously loaded up his pockets with dog biscuits before heading out on his neighborhood runs to give treats to every furry friend along his route, knowing each one by name. He was a major supporter of UNC Asheville athletics, particularly the baseball team. Mostly, Mike was a gentleman and friend to all that knew him.

He is preceded in death by his older brother Tom, with whom he is currently racing cars, telling lies, and making memories.

To honor Mike's wishes, there will be no official services. He was never comfortable making things about him. If you wish to honor Mike, please consider making a contribution to support the UNC Asheville baseball program through the UNC Asheville Foundation.
