John (Jack) J. Forbes, Jr. was born on January 29, 1929 in Philadelphia Pa., the only child of the late John J. Forbes and Gladys Dennison Forbes. Jack graduated from Loyola College (49’) and the University of Maryland Law School (53’) in Baltimore, Maryland. During the Korean conflict, he was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Navy.

In 1971, Jack was appointed an Administrative Law Judge with the U.S. Department of Health and Services and assigned to the Raleigh, North Carolina office. In 1984, Judge Forbes was appointed to the position of Chief Administrative Law Judge. He served throughout Eastern North Carolina until his final retirement in 1995, completing 40 years of federal service.

Retirement was a time of reflection and study for Jack. He enjoyed his family, friends and his home. For Jack, learning and intellectual development was an ongoing project, providing sustaining pleasure. Foremost in his long life was his wife and family. All of these loving individuals were the recipients of his faithful and unwavering love, interest and pride.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Joan White Forbes; his daughter, Mary Joan Forbes, MD of Raleigh; sons, Fr. John Forbes III of Pinehurst, Stephen Forbes of Atlanta, GA, Thomas Forbes of New Hill, and Robert (Vanessa) Forbes of Nashville, TN; 10 grandchildren, Stephen, Jr. (Sarah), Bradley, Kristen, Thomas Jr., Lauren (Cormac), Amelia, Emily, Sean, Catherine and Alexander; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Jack was a faithful member of St. Raphael Catholic Church where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 12:00 Noon. Family will receive friends at Renaissance Funeral Home on Friday, July 6, 2018 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
