Obituary For John Henry Steinbaugh

John Henry Steinbaugh, 71, died suddenly and unexpectedly Saturday morning while walking at Falls Lake with his wife and their dogs Buddy and Freckles. John was a wonderful husband, father, and friend, doctor and teacher to many people whom he loved.

John was born in Pittsburgh, PA and moved to Raleigh with his wife Barbara 40 years ago. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Patricia Steinbaugh, his brother Michael (Valerie) Steinbaugh and his sister Sally Steinbaugh as well as his mother and father-in-law Frederick and Helen Sickels. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara, beloved son John Alexander Steinbaugh, sister Denise (Bob) Fantazier, Corinne Alise Olson, and Jed Stephen Steinbaugh along with many nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

John was a graduate of LaSalle College, studied graduate level Marina Biology at Duke University, and received his DC degree from Logan College of Chiropractic. He had a thriving private practice for over 30 years at which time he developed a special bond with his patients, many of whom became life-long friends. After retirement from his practice, he was actively consulting and went back to his first love of teaching. At the time of his death, he was teaching Chemistry and Physics at Kerr Vance Academy. John was proud to be a Paul Harris Fellow and a Diplomate of American Board of Forensic Professionals. He was an exceptional athlete excelling in swimming, football, and track in high school and college. He loved volunteering as a timer at Alex’s swim meets and track and field events at Ravenscroft.

Simply put -- John Steinbaugh was one of my all-time favorite people. I am certainly not alone with that sentiment. I have never known a person who was more generous, open, kind, gentle, and engaging. Many many many people now have a huge hole in their lives with John's passing. Rest in Peace my Dear Friend! John saved my life more than once when I lived in Raleigh and suffered from severe neck and back pains. We became friends for life and shared our love of swimming, talking about it whenever I had an appointment with him. I am so very sorry to hear of his death, and I am sending my sincere condolences to his family and friends. John and I shared lively banter on our choice of schools, he being lined up with the evil dark blue, while my shade of the light blue (the right blue) held firm. John was a great man and friend. I knew John from Kerr Vance Academy. He was a coworker to me and teacher to my sons. He was always genuinely kind and thoughtful. It was very apparent that he cared about everyone he encountered. We will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

John was the quintessential gentleman. Always kind, gracious, and genuine. Our families spent many holidays together, and John (Barb and Alex) had a way of making us all feel right at home. We will miss his terrific sense of humor and feel blessed for the wonderful memories we have of him. Sending our prayers and love to Barb and Alex. Phil, Marina, Christina, Alex, and Danny
