Obituary For John Douglas Hoffman
John Douglas (“Doug”) Hoffman passed away in his sleep on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 in Raleigh. He was 93 years old. Doug was born on March 31, 1931 in Gastonia, NC. He was the second of three sons born to Ambrose Ladell and Maude B. Hoffman. Doug grew up in Gastonia. After graduating from Gastonia High School in June of 1951, he married his childhood sweetheart and love of his life, Patricia Andrews on June 22, 1951. They were married 72 years before her death in 2023.
Doug began his career with Nationwide Life Insurance Company in 1951, while living in Gastonia. He was promoted to District Sales Manager and transferred to Statesville, NC in 1962. He was later transferred to to Raleigh, NC, where he and Pat raised their two children, Stephen and Lisa. Always ready with a great “Dad Joke” or planning his next magic trick to amaze his children, Doug convinced Stephen and Lisa that his birthday, March 31st, was a holiday known as “St. Hoffman’s Day.” You could see the twinkle in his eye as he pulled a quarter out of the ear of any small child within arm’s reach. Growing up, Lisa was (and still is) reminded that “You are Doug’s Daughter” whenever she grows impatient or frustrated. While living in Raleigh Doug and Pat attended Highland United Methodist Church, where they were both active volunteers, serving many roles in service to the church. Doug retired from Nationwide Life Insurance Company and moved to Southern Pines in 1982.
Growing up, he was an avid golfer and bowler. He won multiple tournaments in both sports, accumulating an impressive collection of trophies and other awards. Doug and Pat were charter members at MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary. He shot the first ever hole in one on the course there, and is honored still today with a plaque hanging in the clubhouse. After retirement, Doug and Pat were active in their community in Southern Pines, volunteering in both church and community groups. He was able to play the world famous Pinehurst #2 more than once, a dream come true for all golfers. Although Doug would not disclose his score, his smile never faded when talking about time on the legendary course. Doug and Pat returned to Raleigh in 2020 to be closer to their daughter, Lisa, as their health began to decline.
Doug is predeceased by his parents, Ambrose Ladell and Maude B. Hoffman of Gastonia, his brothers, Robert E. Hoffman (Rubye and later Marge) of Alabama and Billie B. Hoffman (Mary) of South Carolina. The love of his life and soulmate, Pat, died in 2023. He is survived by his son, Stephen Douglas Hoffman (Becky) of Boone and his daughter, Lisa Hoffman Piratzky
(Chuck) of Knightdale. He is also survived by his grandsons, Charles Adam Piratzky (Marissa) of Franklinton; Andrew Douglas Piratzky (Samantha) of Zebulon and Aaron Philip Piratzky of Wendell. Also left to treasure his memory are his three great-grandchildren; Charles Douglas Piratzky and Liam Alexander Piratzky of Franklinton and Sophia Leigh Piratzky of Zebulon, along with many beloved nieces and nephews. In testament to his loving nature and enduring love for his family, his son, grandson and great-grandson all share his middle name.
A Prayer Service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at Highland United Methodist Church, 1901 Ridge Road in Raleigh, followed by inurnment in the columbarium alongside his wife, Pat. All are invited to join with us to remember and honor his life.
