Obituary For Jo Marie Schulist

Mrs. Josephine “Jo Marie” Schulist, 76 of Raleigh, North Carolina peacefully reached her destination of eternal rest. She was the oldest of four daughters born to the late Chester and Mary (Gust) Radowski. Josephine was born June 19, 1946, in Ironwood, Michigan and was raised in nearby Wakefield, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula (the UP) of Michigan. She married her love, James Joseph Schulist, (Jim), in 1968 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where they welcomed their first two daughters, Anne and Laura and the first of many four-legged children. The family relocated to Raleigh NC for Jim’s job with Square D in 1973, and welcomed their third daughter, Katie. Jo Marie was not only a wife and mother. She began her own business as an English as a Second Language Tutor in the mid 1980s and enjoyed sharing and learning cultures and customs with her students and their families. She was a wonderful coach of not only language, but introduction into living in the US. She enjoyed her role and her time with her students and their shared kindness, serious silliness, and most of all the Swiss chocolate! Jo Marie was a devoted wife who retired early to care for her husband, Jim, in his cancer diagnosis. She cared for him through his sickness until his passing, and again twenty years later for her youngest daughter and her cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Her quiet strength endured multiple tests, trials and tribulations as she honored loved ones, giving of herself with her time, attention, energy and other works of service. She was an avid college basketball fan, especially dedicated to the Duke Blue Devils led by a fellow Polish American, Coach K. Much like her father Chester, Jo Marie was an avid and successful gardener. She spent many days tending to the blooms in her yard and could tell you the story of how she got each one. We are lucky to be able to gather these flowers and bring them to our own yards to bloom each year in her memory. Jo Marie was preceded in death by her husband, James Joseph Schulist and her parents, Chester and Mary Radowski. She is survived by children: Laura Schulist, Anne Berry, Katie Schulist, Dave Karrels; and many others who loved her dearly including her best friend and son-in-law, Jason Berry; nieces and granddaughters: Zandra Berry, Leah Karrels, Kerri Clavette, Indika Bridgewater, her sisters Chris Clavette, Rita MacDuff, Pattie Kolesar; and many other nieces, nephews, and all the friends that saw her as a secondary mother. The service will be held at Renaissance Funeral Home on Six Forks Rd in Raleigh at 5pm on Wednesday September 21st. There will be a live stream for guests that are not able to attend in person - link provided tomorrow. We will host family and friends at Pipers Tavern and Restaurant for dinner, drinks, and conversation at 8304 Falls of the Neuse Rd after the service. Although Jo Marie spent years of her life tending to beautiful flowers in her gardens and flowers brought her much joy, she was nothing if not pragmatic and we would appreciate any support to causes dear to her. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the SPCA of Wake County, the Dementia Alliance, Project Enlightenment Foundation, or the Pullen Center for Hope.

Note: The funeral will be livestreamed at 5pm on Wednesday, September 21, 2022. Click the YouTube link below to be directed to the funeral home YouTube page. The page will reveal the active livestream funeral about 4:45pm.
