Words fail to describe the hole left in my heart, and in many a heart, by Jurek's death. RIP. -Halina Glowacki

A refugee from Poland, George epitomized the American Dream, rising to Chief Engineer in the US Merchant Marine. He was a man among men. He could always be counted on by every person, in every situation.

George has helped train and mold countless cadets and ship officers to be the best engineers possible. He will be missed by all in more ways than anyone can possibly detail.

George is survived by his wife and sister, extended family and legions of friends.

Jerzy was one of my closest friends in and since college. We both got to work for the same shipping company after college and he became a well respected Marine Engineer. We did get to sail together on one ship as Chief and Fist Engineers. It was the first time the company put to young college grads together as the upper engineering officers. We shared many adventures in our younger years and fondly recall the road rallies we enterred in using Jerzy's high priced Porsche. We never won but always has a fun and memorable experience. I will surely miss our monthly phone calls as we discussed old times and was always impressed with his memory of all details involved. He will be missed as a brother is missed. RIP G, John J Botte

We remember meeting Jurek for the first time in La Jolla soon after our coming to the US. He was building his beautiful ship then. Such a charming, incredibly smart young engineer with beautiful blond hair and an irresistible smile! We wouldnt have made it in this great country if it wasnt for Jurek and Halina. We will be forever grateful for that! You were always like family to us! Wish we could spent more time with you. Jurek, you left us all too soon, but will remain forever in our hearts! Rest in peace dear friend! Our hearts go out to you Halina! Joasia i Witek

I met George through Halina while she was working at the American Airlines Club in Raleigh. I made mention that I was a Mass Maritime grad and the rest is history. George and I shared many sea stories. He was a remarkable engineer. His ship models were beautiful and his ability to trouble shoot any problem was amazing. Many a time he would tell me to stop by after work so we could talk about the events of the day. I never left their house hungry and they were always very hospitable. He was always proud to be an American. He loved the country and the opportunity it gave to him. Know that he is at peace with God and he will grant Halina strength. Fair winds and calm seas from now on my friend. Dan Donabedian

Halina, please accept my condolences for your loss, words cannot express the sorrow of Jerzy's death. I first met George in 1966 at NY Maritime, spending 4 formative years. Afterwards we sailed together briefly as Watch Officers on the summer training cruise. George put together the 25th anniversary reunion of the class of '70 and his records help the efforts for the 50th anniversary. God Bless you George, Rest in Peace Halina Stay strong. Jack Craft

George was the older brother I never had. Close since our days at Maritime we always stayed in touch and got together when ever our circumstances allowed. Memories include studying for license exam at our local library, Sabastians on Tremont Ave. Trips to Van Courtland Park with the cross-country team as a driver, with John, George, Crafty and Matt Toomey who always had words of wisdom for Us. Having the U.S. Navy deliver a telex to my apartment in Sasebo, Japan giving me your ships arrival time so that we could meet up. Trips to Raleigh, NC for marathon sea story sessions and good food, and long phone calls with more stories of the sea and ships and family. George could accomplish anything he put his mind to and his career was an inspiration to me in those times I doubted my career choices. You will be forever missed. Rest in Peace my Friend. What a loss, George was such a talented and skilled Engineer but more importantly a treasured shipmate and friend. The two of which have seemingly been lost in today's seafaring and shore side community. Vale ! George

Jerzy ran me ragged on my first tour, thought he had it in for me. I was truly honored when he asked to rejoin for the next tour, and the next and the next. Learned, grew, and enjoyed those days. Building the swimming pool, shipyards in Portland, the voyage with Halina complete with tyvex tuxedos and formal dinner. My mentor, my friend. Rest easy. .

I met Jurek in June, 1978, somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic. He was a Watch Officer and I was a first-class cadet on the TSES V. Somehow I impressed him during that watch, enough so that he invited me to have a beer with him at 0400. Truly, it was the best beer I ever had....even to this day !! Somehow, we connected and always kept in touch, through good times and bad, and believe me..... there were plenty of each in the 42 years that I called him my friend. I was his 3rd, 2nd and 1st A/E on various ships and he never ceased to amaze me, as well as everyone else, with his knowledge and composure in any situation. Jurek's professional calling was definitely that of a Chief Engineer but his personal calling was that of a sage, mentor and, in my case, confidant. My world is definitely a sadder place but he will never be forgotten. My condolences to Halina and Jurek's extended family. Brian, Chelsea, and Samuel

My fondest memories were our family visits to Raleigh. Jurek was always looking out for the kids making sure they were having lots of fun in the pool. He carved out quality time for them with stimulating conversation and activities. I will surely miss him putting around the kitchen and preparing memorable for us lunches. He will always be in our heart. The ORNAFs of Connecticut
