Obituary For Jennifer Miller Green

The Honorable Jennifer M. Green, 53, passed away on December 12, 2014 in Raleigh, NC at Transitions LifeCare Hospice Home surrounded by her family. As a teenager, Jennifer was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma which led to various other illnesses and afflictions. Her latest battle, which started on October 9th unfortunately could not be overcome. Through all her illnesses, Jennifer never complained and few knew of any of her illnesses.

Jennifer was born in Roanoke Rapids, NC on June 26, 1961 to Milton and Barbara Miller. Being the daughter of military family, Jennifer grew up in Atlanta, Germany, Hampton , VA and finally settling in Beulaville, NC from where she graduated from East Duplin High School. She attended UNC-Greensboro where she received a BS in Business Administration and then graduated with JD from UNC.

Jennifer began her legal career as a family lawyer at various firms in Raleigh. In 2000, she was elected as a District Court Judge, a position she held at the time of her death. A dedicated public servant, she was unafraid to make difficult and tough decisions, including her long time commitment to combating Domestic Violence. In addition to her work, she was dedicated to her family, serving her church as an elder and on other committees, and various other organizations. She is survived by her loving husband and son, Mark A. La Mantia and Cameron M. Green (a second year law student at the University of Miami), a step-daughter Elyse Hope of Seattle, her mother Barbara Miller of Raleigh, her sister Cheryl Piner and her husband Jim of Rocky Mount, and a host of other family, friends and colleagues that are near and dear to her heart. Jennifer is pre-deceased by her father, Milton S Miller.

A service of celebration will be held on Thursday, December 18th, at Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church, 7506 Falls of Neuse Road, Raleigh, NC at 6:00 PM. The family will receive visitors after the service in the church fellowship hall.

The family wishes to thank the staff of CICU at Rex Hospital and Transitions LifeCare Hospice for caring for Jennifer.

I worked alongside Judge Green for many years and have been told on many occasions that I am the longest working Civil Court Advocate InterAct has had. Judge Green and I were quite close and shared a bond that is hard to explain to many people. During my years, I have learned many lessons from her as a budding young professional to a more seasoned advocate. She has not only impacted my career and my growth from young womanhood to true adulthood, but she has impacted the lives of many people in the tough face of domestic violence and custody conflicts. Judge Green approached these situations with a critical understanding of not just the law, but also the dynamics of domestic violence and abuse and did not take these things lightly. There would be many a day where she and I recalled cases from years prior. It is truly a blessing to have known such a strong woman and have had the opportunity to be affected by her on a personal level. I am grateful for the work that she has done and the impact she has made on every person she has seen. I am deeply affected by this loss and my thoughts and energy go out to her family. Thank you, Judge Green, for always being yourself and being present when I needed your support.

My son Ian Scofield was in scouting with Jennifer's son Cameron. Jennifer and her husband Mark were both very active in the troop. When my son had a school project involving the judicial system, Jennifer invited us to sit in her courtroom one afternoon and observe. Afterwards she invited us up to the bench and into her chambers, allowed Ian to sit in her chair (quite exciting for him!), and was very patient explaining what her position as a judge entailed. Jennifer was such a can-do person. My family is very saddened with her loss and our hearts, thoughts and most of all prayers go out to her family.

Through the years, Jennifer was a tireless advocate for her clients and on the bench, she made a true difference for the victims of domestic violence. I hope her son knows he was loved and treasured because she was always talking about what Cameron was up to and how he was doing - she smiled so much when she spoke of her son. What a truly honorable person, a knowledgeable lawyer and a compassionate judge. On Monday, I went to her courtroom before the start of court and said a prayer of thanks for her service to Wake County and I hope she knew we so appreciated a judge of her caliber.
