Obituary For Jean Claire "Bud" Hoff

Jean Claire â??Budâ?? Hoff (Gus Hoff), 93 of Creedmoor, North Carolina passed away peacefully on June 27th at home with his wife, Anne and eldest daughter, Meg by his side. Mr. Hoff, born to Francis J. Sr. and Clara E. (Baer) Hoff on April 26, 1919 in Detroit, Michigan was one of four children, Francis J. Jr. â??Jimâ??, Rosemary (Zynda) and Robert â??Bobâ?? all of whom are deceased. Prior to retiring to N.C. in 1993, he lived and worked in Detroit, MI, Parma, OH, Stamford, CT, Atlanta, GA and Stratford, CT starting in sales with Bohn Aluminum & Brass (MI), followed by Kaiser Aluminum (MI) and subsequently to KBI (formerly Kawecki Chemical Company, NY & PA) where he worked from 1953 to 1985 as a Metallurgical & Chemical Engineer as well as Sales Manager. It was during his tenure at Kawecki Chemical that he invented the use of TIBOR wire for grain refining and phosphorous modification of master alloys. This process saved the aluminum industry money and expanded productivity and was patented in 12 countries. Mr. Hoff served as consultant to two master alloy companies in NY from 1986 until his retirement in 1991 and was well liked and highly regarded in his profession. Gus attended Visitation High School in Detroit and received his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Detroit in 1943. Mr. Hoff played on the basketball teams at both his high school and the university. He had a great sense of humor and everything Bud did was for his family. Bud was an outstanding, loving and thoughtful husband. He loved spending time with his family and is remembered for always making time to play with his children and help with homework even after a very long day at work or business trip. He often said how proud he was of his children and grandchildren. He had a passion for Detroitâ??s professional sports teams and avidly followed hockey, basketball, baseball and golf. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary Anne (Ronan) Hoff of Creedmoor NC, their four daughters Meg Hoff of Creedmoor NC, Cecelia Farrell and her husband Donald of Raleigh NC, Mary Hoff of Apex NC, Geri Shay and her husband Terry of Ridgefield CT. He is also survived by two sons Robert Hoff and his wife Donna of Wake Forest NC and Joseph Hoff and his wife Sarah of St. Louis MO. His eldest son, William Hoff of Raleigh NC, predeceased him in January 2012 and an infant daughter, Mary Angela in 1962. Also surviving him are thirteen grandchildren -Shannon Farrell and her partner Neil Major, Colleen Farrell, Geoffrey Menko, Dylan, Caitlin and Andrew Shay, Devon Mitchell and his wife Lauren, Traci Miller and her partner Shannon Mason, David Towles, Jonathan, Rachel, Kate and Alex Hoff, five great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial and Interment will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 2:00 pm at St. Francis Roman Catholic Church and Columbarium, 11401 Leesville Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27613 followed by a gathering at the church for friends and family. Memorial donations may be made in Mr. Hoffâ??s memory to St. Bernadetteâ??s Catholic Church 804 West D Street, Butner, NC 27509 OR St. Francis Catholic Church 11401 Leesville Rd, Raleigh, NC 27613.
