Obituary For James Reid Mulligan

James Reid Mulligan, 76, of Raleigh, NC, died peacefully on October 28, 2023, at home surrounded by his family after a difficult battle with Parkinson's.

Born in Latrobe, PA, November 27, 1946, he spent his formative years in Derry, PA and Camp Hill, PA, graduating from Cedar Cliff High School. He went on to graduate from General Motors Institute of Engineering (GMI) in Flint, MI, where he made many longtime friends, especially through his fraternity, Sigma Nu. After earning an MBA from Rutgers University, Jim and his wife Kathie moved from Edison, NJ, back to Camp Hill, PA to raise their children and be closer to family. Jim began working for DuPont Chemical as an engineer in 1979. He had the opportunity to live in several cities, but Raleigh became his final home in 1993 and is where he remained until he retired. In retirement Jim then founded North Raleigh Realty, selling single family homes. He was also active with his neighborhood association board of directors.

Both personally and professionally, Jim was a gentleman and a host. Always well-mannered, he never missed an opportunity to hold the door for a stranger and took time to say thank you. Every time a woman arrived or sat down at his table, he always stood up. He knew the importance of dressing well, looking others in the eye, and giving a firm handshake. At his core, he wanted nothing more than to share a good meal and a fine glass of wine with his friends and family. For Jim, it wasn't just about the food, but it was about the people, the experience, and the lasting memories they created. It is those wonderful memories that will continue to live on in those that have been blessed to have known his kind spirit.

Jim was predeceased by both parents, Robert and Mary Mulligan. He leaves his high school sweetheart and wife of 55 years Kathie (Thompson) Mulligan; two children, daughter Erin (Peter) Graber of Raleigh and son Kirk Mulligan of Raleigh; two grandchildren, Ella Reid Graber and Nola Grace Graber; and brother David Mulligan (Helina) of Naples, FL.

Jim will be honored Saturday, November 18, 2023, 2:30 p.m. at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC 27615. Visitation for friends and family will follow the memorial service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Duke Hospice.

My beloved cousin "Jimmy." We were the youngest of the cousins until my little brother Reed came along 8 years later - thus we spent much early childhood time playing together and self-entertained while the adults and "older cousins" played cards and otherwise made us much aware of families laughing together, playing cards and much enjoying family unity. It rubbed off on us as we grew and made our own paths in the different worlds in which we lived - reading my beloved Jim's obit I can fully articulate - at age 75 - how, along with beloved family adult examples, I was gifted by growing up with a genuinely kind, respectful, tremendously loyal and devoted cousin. All my life Jim aka Jimmy has been by my side in heart and soul. Most lovingly Margot Elizabeth
