Obituary For Jaime Ivan León

Jaime Ivan León, 69, passed away Monday, February 19th, 2018. He was born July 8th, 1948 in Colombia, South America. Jaime received his degree in electrical engineering from Florida Institute of Technology. He began his career as an engineer at NASA and worked on the Apollo-Soyuz project, the first international cooperative man space flight. His adventurous spirit then took him and his family abroad to Turkey and South America where he worked on engineering projects. In the mid 80’s, Jaime and his family moved to Raleigh, NC, where he worked for CP&L/Progress Energy/Duke Energy for over 25 years.

Jaime was active in the community and served as a board member of both the Latin American Association of North Carolina and Diamante Arts and Cultural Center for over two decades. When he wasn’t volunteering, you could find him in the kitchen cooking paella or some other amazing dish, reading, on the greenway out for a long bike ride, or traveling with his wife. Jaime was a loving husband, father, brother, and son.

Jaime is survived by his wife, Martha León, daughter, Melanie León of Los Angeles, son-in-law, Dietrich Schuhl of Los Angeles, mother, Esther de León, brother, Edward León of Miami, and sister Angela León. Jaime is preceded in death by his daughter, Hillary León Swartzentruber, his father, Hector León, and his brother, Guillermo Orlando León. Memorial Services will be held at 11 AM Friday, February 23rd, at St. Francis of Assisi Church. The family will receive friends before and after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to UNC Lineberger Cancer Center.

I worked with Jamie over the years at CP&L/Progress. I leaned on him often for his technical knowledge and he always would provide it freely. Such a dedicated and caring man. My prayers go out to his loved ones as they suffer his loss. Robert Nuckols

It is with a heavy heart that I send my condolences to the family of Jaime. I knew him for many years through the International Festival and his organizational skills certainly were evident in his work with the Latin group. He was a loving, fun person and will be missed by many. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this trying time. With fondest memories, Joyce Kekas
