Obituary For H.T. "Rough" Conner

H.T. “Rough” Conner, died Wednesday, November 8, 2017.

He was the son of the late Herbert Alexander and Georgia Logan Conner. Dr. Conner was preceded in death by his wife Kathryn Conner in 2015.

He was a long time Raleigh resident but was raised in the Masonic Home of Virginia at Richmond. As a teenager, he served in the Army Air Corp during WWII flying 35 missions in the China-Burma-India theater for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. After his Ph.D. at UNC Chapel Hill, he began a career in education serving as NC State Assistant Superintendent of Public Instruction prior to his retirement. He was a passionate writer and athlete.

Dr. Conner is survived by one son, Mark Conner and one daughter, Deborah Ann Conner.

In Lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to the Masonic Home of Virginia, P.O. Box 7866 Henrico VA 23231.

    Dr. Connor was competent, knowledgable and truly efficient administrator. And, oh, what a joy he was to be around!     Thought about HT today, what a great human being. I met him working at Rapid Fitness and he was a personality that you could not forget.

    I was privileged to accompany H.T. as his "guardian" on his Flight of Honor to Washington, D.C. My wife, Marlene, and I enjoyed many happy visits with H.T. We will always treasure the time we shared with"Rough". Ed & Marlene Kearney
