Obituary For Hanya Hani Redwan

In Loving Memory of Hanya Hani Redwan

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Hanya Hani Redwan, who transitioned on October 8, 2024 at the age of 56, with her mother by her side. Hanya devoted her life to her family, friends, neighbors, and all her students at North Carolina State University and Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Hanya was born in Lagos, Nigeria to Hani and Hana Redwan (née Hana Abdul-Khalek). She attended primary school in Beirut, Lebanon and began her secondary eduation in London, England. In 1984, she moved with her family to Raleigh, North Carolina, graduating as valedictorian from Saint Mary's College at the age of sixteen. Hanya then earned bachelor's degrees in communications and political science from NC State, graduating summa cum laude.

Hanya's career began as a staff member in the Office of International Students at NC State later becoming the Associate Director of International Students. Concurrently, she taught English as a Second Language (ESL) at Wake Technical Community College, where her passion for education and the international community was evident in her exceptional teaching style, earning her immense respect from her colleagues and students.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Hanya was an artist at heart. Her deep understanding and insightful analysis of symbolic content in films, the profound emotion expressed in her canvas paintings, and her ability to create incredible meals were unmatched, save for her mother's cooking.

Hanya's love extended to all, but none more so than her nephews, about whom she spoke with great pride. She is preceded in death by her father, Hani, and is survived by her mother, Hana; her sister, Alida (Jeremy); and her nephews, Alexander, Tristen, and Dylan.

A memorial service to honor and celebrate Hanya's life will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Rd, Raleigh, NC 27615.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to an educational scholarship fund named in her honor at https://gofund.me/22bd75c9

I was very shocked and saddened to hear of Hanya's passing. We worked together at the OIS at NC State in the 90's. She was committed to helping students and often went the extra mile to assist. I wish her family great comfort and peace.

Hanya was my maid of honor in 1993. I think of her often.

Hanya was one of the first people I remember working with when I began learning how to be an international student advisor and PDSO. She shared her knowledge with kindness and an incredible amount of patience (I asked soooo many questions). I am so very sorry for your loss and hope you are able to find the wonderful memories I have of her something that can bring you at least a small smile in the days and weeks to come.

It was such an honor to work with Hanya- in one of my first professional positions early on in my career. Hanya was so caring and kind - and was so happy when she learned I was expecting my first child - and even through a very special baby shower for me (for my daughter who is now 25 and in Medical School)! She and I co-trained together on cross-cultural trainings at NC State - and I learned so much from her! And I also shared with her about teaching ESL at Wake Tech and was thrilled when she started teaching there. Hanya will always have a very special place in my life.

Hana, please accept my sincere condolences. I found out earlier today from one of our neighbors Hanya had passed. I was in extreme shock over receiving the news . It was always a pleasure talking with you both when I saw you outside. You remain in my thoughts and prayers during this time. Surrounding you in love. Zaneta C. (your neighbor #103)

Hana and Alida, I am so sorry to hear about Hanya. She meant so much to me during our time at NC State. We know she didn't like having her photo taken so I cherish the photos (uploaded) that I do have. I think these were her happiest years at NC State. She was very close to the group of students in the first photo. One of my happiest memories with her was a season where a group of 4 ladies would take turns bringing lunch for the others, once a week (we adored your hummus Hana. Hanya never claimed she made it :)). We would talk about food and life during those lunches and laugh a lot. I know you will miss her greatly; she was such a caring, brilliant and talented person.
