Hank Gholi Hoomani, 83, of Raleigh, North Carolina, died January 4, 2023. Hank was born February 19, 1939, in Tabriz, Iran to the late Abdol Hossein Hoomani and Shamci Hoomani. Hank became a naturalized American Citizen on March 16, 1971. Hank received his primary and secondary education in Tehran, Iran. He then enrolled at N.C. State University in 1958 in the School of Engineering. Hank’s roots at N.C. State University run long and deep. Hank received three degrees from N.C. State University’s School of Engineering – his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1962; his Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1966; and his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in 1977. Two of his sons also received degrees from N.C. State University. Hank was inducted into The Society of the Sigma Xi, an honor society for science and engineering, on May 12, 1966, and was inducted into the N.C. State University Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Hall of Fame in 2013. While at N.C. State University, Paul Derr, the famed track coach, noticed his speed and recruited him to run track. Hank was an accomplished sprinter, specializing in the 100 meters and 200 meters. A three-year letterman in track, Hank qualified for the Iranian National Team in both the 100 meters and 200 meters for the 1960 Olympics in Rome, Italy. His qualifying times in the 100 meters (10.6 seconds) and 200 meters (21.7 seconds) set new records for his home country of Iran. Hank was licensed as a Professional Engineer, and in 1975 he founded Progressive Design Collaborative, Ltd., an employee-owned collaborative that provides efficient and coordinated consulting engineering services. Hank managed the firm for nearly 40 years until his retirement in 2013. Following his retirement, Hank focused full-time on his passions, playing golf at North Ridge County Club, and attending N.C. State football and basketball games. Hank was a long-time season ticket holder for Wolfpack athletics and established a scholarship for undergraduate students in the N.C. State University College of Engineering - Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in 2004.
Hank was pre-deceased in death by his son, Anthony Darius Hoomani. Hank is survived by his wife, Jan Hoomani; son, Chris Hoomani and wife, Bethany, and grandsons, Jaxson and Tucker; son, John Hoomani and wife, Mary Beth, and granddaughter, Campbell; step-son, Jay Bucklen and wife, Eileen, and granddaughter, Samantha; step-daughter, Katie Bucklen and husband, John Lin and grandsons, Ian and Simon; brother, Jeff Hoomani and wife, Susan; brother, Ali Hoomani and wife, Nigar; brother Massood Hoomani and wife, Suzie; sister, Sherry Wakeham, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at 1:30PM at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC 27615. A visitation will immediately follow the service where the family will receive friends.
