Obituary For Gregory Lee Yowell

We celebrate the life of Gregory Lee Yowell, loving husband, amazing father, uncle, and friend. Greg was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Champ and Jacqueline Yowell in 1946. His family moved out west where Greg spent his youth in the foothills of the beautiful Rocky Mountains. He attended Lakewood High School and graduated from Western State University in Gunnison, Colorado. His many outdoor adventures and memories throughout this time ignited a lifelong passion for the outdoors and conservation that he would go on to instill in his children.

Greg joined the Army after college and met the love of his life of 52 years, Alicia, while she was on a holiday with friends in Europe. He asked her to marry him only after three hours, it was true love at first sight. They settled in Virginia and raised three kids while Greg worked for over 40 years for the Farm Credit Administration (FCA). He earned two master’s degrees, one from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and one from the University of Chicago. He received numerous awards and recognitions throughout the years, but all would say his greatest accomplishments were being a great dad and husband. From coach to number one fan, he was always seen running from one youth sporting event to the next.

He was an avid fan of the Washington Nationals Baseball team and enjoyed cheering on any NFL or college sporting event with friends and family. He was a lifelong fisherman and loved telling stories about various days spent casting a line. He was a world traveler and immensely enjoyed learning about different cultures and history. He was an avid reader and went on to fulfill a lifelong dream as a published author. He will be remembered for his quick wit, positive spirit, kind nature, always being ready to lend a hand and being able to reach people in a meaningful way. Greg is survived by his wife Alicia (Rooney), three children, Jennifer, Bill and Ashleigh, and a host of relatives. His family is profoundly grateful for the support, love, and prayers of everyone during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations honoring Greg can be sent to Feeding America and Habitat for Humanity.

Small Celebration of Life gatherings will be hosted by Alicia throughout the coming year.
