Obituary For Gregory Charles Hobbs

Gregory Charles Hobbs, 65, died Friday, October 20, in Austin, Texas. He will be greatly missed.

Born in Raleigh in the summer of 1958 at the old Rex Hospital on Wade Avenue, he is the son of Douglas M. Hobbs of Raleigh and the late Teresa Gallagher Hobbs. He graduated from The Judson School in Scottsdale, AZ and East Carolina University.

Greg had a great passion for all things real estate. He absolutely loved all aspects of the business, above all, caring for and building his relationship with his customers. When he was a teenager, he helped renovate the Lawyers Building in downtown Raleigh, which motivated him toward his career. After graduating from ECU, he moved to Houston,TX, where he met his wife, Mary, and had three children. He worked several years for Jones Lang Wootton, now JLL, and he was delighted to be there. He brought his family back to Raleigh in 1995 and began his new company, Hobbs Properties. Greg was continuously encouraged by his father and the two of them loved working and spending time together. Greg always persevered and looked for ways to improve.

He loved spending time at his farm in Milton, NC, especially with family, and had a lot of fun "driving" cars at VIR. One of his favorite memories was before his daughter's wedding when loads of family, in town for the wedding, gathered at the barn for Christmas dinner. Charlie, Teddy, and Uncles Chip and Mark broke out the guitars and banjo, and led the family in fun and cheerful song. It was a happy time.

Greg desired to love and serve Jesus well, and was grateful for his Catholic upbringing. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, and found his home in the Legion of Mary, seeing it as a path to holiness and a way to share his love for God. He loved his family with all his heart and encouraged his children to put God first and do their best with the talents they were given.

Greg is survived by his wife, Mary; his father, Douglas; his children, Gregory Charles Jr. "Charlie", Rosemary Watson (Geoff) Daniel, and Edward Gallagher “Teddy;” his three grandchildren, Wesley Watson Daniel, Georgia Lee Daniel, and Elizabeth Grey Daniel; his sister, Sheila (Steve) Warrick; brothers, Chris (Martha), Steve (Gwenn), and Sean (Betsy); and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Raleigh at 11:00 a.m. (Rosary at 10:30 a.m.) on Friday, October 27, 2023 with a reception following. Please consider donating to birthchoicewake.org in Greg's memory.

For several years, we had the privilege of knowing Greg, whom we affectionately refer to as Br. Greg. He's been a source of great admiration for us. I cherished the pearls of wisdom he shared every time we spent together. Greg was not only a man of profound faith and prayer but also an active member of the Legion, always eager to serve the Lord. His life was a testament to his missionary spirit, constantly striving to guide others toward the path of faith. His love for his family was immeasurable, and he spoke of them with boundless admiration and pride. He had said numerous times that his greatest blessing is his wonderful family that he is blessed with. The numerous occasions on which Greg and his wife, Mary, generously welcomed us into their home are too numerous to tally. His absence will be deeply felt by all of us. We consider it a true blessing to have known both him and Mary and will forever treasure every moment we spent with Br. Greg. Br. Greg, You fought a good fight and now it's time for your eternal reward. We extend our deepest condolences to the Hobbs family. With heartfelt sympathy, Hrideep and Minnu
