Obituary For Grace Margaret Gissy

Grace M. Gissy, a long-time resident Raleigh, NC, passed away on March 12, 2018. Grace Margaret Mascioli Gissy was born in 1926 in Morgantown, WV, one of ten children. She earned her nursing degree with plans of serving in WW II but completed her degree just as the war was ending. She stayed in Morgantown and worked at a hospital while living at home. She met her future husband, John L. Gissy, through a mutual friend and the two were married in 1951. Together they moved to Oak Ridge, TN and then to Columbus, Ohio, where they had four children. In 1963 they relocated to Woodsfield, Ohio where Grace learned how to grow vegetables and preserve produce while raising four children. She was very active in St. Sylvester’s church and school, she participated in a local bowling league and enjoyed playing bridge. In 1975 she earned her Pediatric Nurse Associate degree at the University of Cincinnati and ran a well-child clinic in Monroe County, Ohio. After John passed away in 1978 Grace worked as a school nurse until retiring. She relocated to Charlotte, NC in 1989 where she volunteered at a school for children with developmental disabilities. She made one more move in 1995 to Raleigh, NC to be near her youngest daughter and son-in-law. There, she became active in two senior groups, played bridge, helped raise her youngest grandchild and attended local plays and concerts. Grace was a phenomenal cook, loved music, especially big band era songs, adored children, had a wicked sense of humor and was devoted to her family. She is survived by her four children: John L Gissy II, Judith Gissy, Mark E. Gissy and Marie Gissy Wedge, her four grandchildren: Sharon Gissy, Janice Gissy Burger, Mikaela Gissy and Matthew Wedge, and her great-grandson Calvin Burger.

A mass and rite of committal will take place at a later date in Woodsfield, Ohio.

Mom was 75 when my son Matthew was born. When he was 6 months old I walked into the kitchen to find her crawling under the table with him! I said, Mom! What are you doing? She answered, At my age, if you dont use it you lose it. She loved all of her grandchildren and would do anything for them.

I have very fond memories of visiting Columbus Ohio every summer as a child with my father Salvatore, Graces brother, and my mother, sister, two brothers and grandparents. We never missed a summer visit with our aunt & uncle and cousins and it was always a lot of fun! We are all saddened by her passing Rest In Peace Auntie Grace

Grace was not only a wonderful woman, but an amazing neighbor. She nursed out kids back to health after many bike wrecks. She was always there when we needed her. Our deepest sympathy to her children and family...may God bless you all.

Grace was one of the greatest women I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. As my neighbor in Woodsfield, she was not only a wonderful friend but a grandma to my kids. I will always miss our coffee times!
