Obituary For George Owen Roberts

George Owen Roberts Jr., age 64, of Raleigh, North Carolina passed away in his sleep on July 22, 2016. George was born October 25, 1951 to the late George Owen Roberts Sr. and Normetha (Purnell) Roberts.

Typical, George, he arrived following a movie date where his parents enjoyed one last night of peace and quiet. He was a busy toddler, earning his nickname, “Skipper”, when he learned to walk aboard a ship to Sierra Leone becoming best buds with the captain, who called him “Little Skipper”.

George was an adored father, the hero to his children. He never ended a phone call that didn’t end in “I love you”. George left a mark on this world admired and treasured by those he left behind. His energy will live on in his children who learned how to love, protect, work hard and demonstrated kindness and love. George was the one who made friends wherever he went, whether it was the grocery store, school event or even walking down the street, he wanted to impart a friendly smile, or bid you a good day. His greatest achievement was being a father.

George was active in sports, playing basketball, football, running track (shot put, triple jump and long jump). He was so well loved in high school that he was named Jr. Prom king at his New Paltz Central High School. George loved all types of music, played bass guitar, and even appeared on TV with his band. He was holistic in his health regime preferring grass fed, organic, and farm raised products.

George was a graduate of The University of California at Irvine (UCI) where he earned a B.A. in Social Sciences. George was known for his excellent speaking skills and demonstrated dynamic presentation skills. He promoted learning technologies that influenced behavior, and was a model of a very effective facilitator who emphasized group interaction and comprehension. George parlayed these skills into human resources, business, sales, marketing, training, coaching, consultation and management throughout his career. He lent his professionalism to a number of corporations, including the Federated Group, BDS Marketing, P.C. Richard and Son, and Sharp Electronics Corporation where he served as the voice and face of the corporation as their National Training Manager for 19 years.

George was affiliated with The Science of Selling, Now Sales Skills, Mandev Sales Training, The ABC’s of Selling and Situational Leadership.

George was proud to have established the Heritage Sponsorship program for the Johnson family reunions. This program enabled family members the financial help to be able to attend such an important event for their family. This program continues to this day.

George is survived by two daughters; Jannelle and Racquel Roberts of Hudson, NY, two sons; George Owen “Justin” Roberts of Philadelphia, PA and Ross Roberts of Chesire, CT.; Two sisters; Neneh Roberts and Alvita Roberts of Raleigh, NC. He is also survived by aunts, nephews, many cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his infant son, Nicholas Roberts.

I only knew him as an opponent I played intramural football against, when I was a student at U.C. Irvine. His father was one of my professors, and I admired his sister from afar. Therefore, I offer my condolences.
