Obituary For George Francis Macrae

George Francis Macrae passed away Friday, April 29, 2016 at Transitions Life Care Hospice House in Raleigh. Mr. Macrae was born on June 4, 1919, in Hastings on Hudson, New York.

As a member of the greatest generation and an Army Air Corps veteran he served with distinction during the Second World War. Mr. Macrae worked as an aircraft mechanic and sales manager for Lockheed, Roar Aviation, Air India, Dynalectron Corporation, Aeromaritime and finally Page Airways. He left Virginia in 1981 and retired in Orlando, Florida. Mr. Macrae moved to Raleigh in 1997 to be closer to his family.

His wife Margaret Gordon Macrae passed away in 2010. In October 2015 he received the prestigious Federal Aviation Administration Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award. This award was presented for over 50 years of service and for contributions to the production of the Lockheed Constellation and first call sign “Air Force One” under then President Dwight Eisenhower.

Mr. Macrae is survived by his daughter Robin Lyter and husband Albert of Raleigh and son Lieutenant Colonel (retired) US Army Gordon Macrae, wife Kathryn and granddaughter Jennifer of Fayetteville and grandsons Captain Jason (wife Brandy) Macrae US Army and Captain Jonathan (wife Hilary) Macrae US Army, both of Texas.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Baptist Church, 400 Newton Rd., Raleigh, NC on May 14, 2016 at 1:00pm. Remembrances can be sent to Christ Baptist Church in lieu of flowers.
