Obituary For Evelyn Jacobs Levin

Evelyn J. Levin, widow of Raphael A. Levin, MD, and beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother died at her residence in Magnolia Glen of Raleigh with her children in attendance.

The 7th of nine children of Dora and Julius Jacobs, she was raised in the Strawberry Mansion section of Philadelphia. After graduating from William Penn High School for Girls, she worked as a bookkeeper, and later, as a stenographer during World War II for the Army Signal Corps. After the War, she worked as an office manager and then did double-duty, raising her family and running her husbands medical practice. In 1972, she and her husband relocated to Ventnor, New Jersey, and retired to Raleigh in 1987. Married for sixty-four loving years before her husbands death in April 2012, they moved to Magnolia Glen in 2007. Evelyn was a faithful and generous friend to many, and welcomed each newcomer to Magnolia Glen. She was devoted to her charitable causes, for which she was an indefatigable fundraiser, including acting as President of the Rose Carnival for Germantown Hospital in Philadelphia and Chapter President for Hadassah of Wake County. When not attending to her family and friends and charitable work, she relaxed with her expert knitting and duplicate bridge.

She was predeceased by her parents, three sisters and three of her brothers.

She is survived by her son, Robert M. Levin, MD, of Boston, Massachusetts, and by her daughter and son in law, Mina L. Levin, MD, and Ronald Schwarz, MD, of Raleigh, and her grandson, Jonathan Schwarz, and his wife, Shannon M. Murtagh, and their daughter, Teagan Murtagh Schwarz, of Seattle, Washington. Also surviving are her younger brothers, Irvin Jacobs, MD and wife Jewel of Dallas, Pennsylvania; Charles Jacobs and wife Joan, of Philadelphia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family is greatly indebted to Evelyns devoted caretaker and loving friend, Marcella Holder, and the administration and staff of Magnolia Glen. They have also appreciated the untiring care and concern provided by Cheryl McNeil, MD, of Doctors Making Housecalls, and Rabbi Raachel Jurovics.

A graveside service will be held at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery on Thursday, March 28th, at 11am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to: Raleigh Chapter of Hadassah, 4856 Winterwood Drive, Raleigh, NC 27613.

I met Evelyn and Ray (and what a blessing their memories are to me!) in the mid-1990s when we canvassed their neighborhood with a petition against building on some local wetlands. Jim suggested that, inasmuch as I'd recently had my first trip to Israel, and as I was teaching a Jewish Roots of Christianity class at Providence Baptist Church, I should get to know the Levins, and indeed, we did. Evelyn introduced me to volunteering with the Hadassah Christmas gift-wrap at Crabtree Valley Mall; now in Colorado, I miss doing that with all those sweet women. When my mom came to visit from California, Evelyn hosted us at a lovely luncheon and was very solicitous and attentive to Mom. Evelyn was very grateful and proud to have such an amazing and loving family and spoke often of them with joy. I lost touch with her after she moved to Magnolia Glen, but I can so see her welcoming each newcomer as she welcomed me into her life. How poignant that the Hebrew expression for "Welcome" is "Blessed is s/he who comes" ... and indeed, I was blessed to come into Evelyn and Ray's circle. May the family and friends she loved so deeply be comforted by knowing what a tzadeikas she was, beloved in the community, missed by many.

Mina, I am sorry to hear of Ellen's passing. She was a wonderful woman. I am glad to have gotten to know her when she was coming to RMG. With love, Brian
