Emily S. Vernon Elliott went home to be with the Lord, Jesus Christ, on March 10, 2016 while visiting her daughter and son-in-law, Eloise and Bill Gallagher of Raleigh, NC. Heart failure ended a life filled with sweet humility and a love felt by all who knew her.

Born in Chester, PA on February 25, 1921 to the late Elenzie and Bervania Shaw, Emily grew up there with her nine siblings, married a handsome young man, Joseph L. Vernon, and raised their family, a son, LeRoy and daughter, Eloise, in that near-Philadelphia area. In 1970, their children, then young adults, the two decided to leave the urban east and head for the clean air of the mountains to the west, settling in Mildred, Pennsylvania. They lived modestly but happily, mostly in Rome, PA for 30 years until Joseph passed away in November of 2000. Eight years later, a kind gentleman discovered the gem named Emily, and they became close friends, the attraction grew, and they decided that a late life marriage might just work! So in 2008, Leroy Elliott and Emily Vernon were wed. Six years later, in 2014, the Lord took Leroy home.

Emily is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Leroy and Peg Vernon of Rome, PA; a daughter and son-in-law, Eloise and Bill Gallagher of Raleigh, NC; two sisters, Jean Haas of Millsboro, DE and Eileen Coffroth of Peach Bottom, PA.; and the four adult children of her late husband, Leroy Elliott: Butch Elliott, Becky Murphy, Shirley Reisch, and Susan Elliott.

In addition, Emily is survived by 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 8 great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and more friends than can be counted. Emily was predeceased by a granddaughter, Rene’ S. Gallagher.Emily Vernon Elliott was a blessing to all. Her selfless, humble and caring demeanor made her beloved by all who knew her. She always desired to do for others, never putting herself first. In her last days, she made lap afghans for ladies in a senior home in Raleigh and crocheted hats for family members.

She was a long time member of the Ghent Quilt Club, where she made many items for friends and family and was an inspiration to young and old in the group. Her talent and artistic abilities allowed her to create porcelain dolls, and design clothes for them with her friends. She loved painting in her early years, and sewing, which she learned from her mother, was probably her favorite pastime, with cooking a close second.

Emily will be greatly missed by her many friends at the Ulster United Methodist Church, and the members of the United Methodist Women.

A Memorial service will be held at the Ulster United Methodist church on April 23, 2016 at 11:30 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the church. The address is: Ulster United Methodist Church, 2nd St. Ulster, PA 18850
