Obituary For Edward Harman Cabaniss

Edward "Ned" Harman Cabaniss III of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away on March 15, 2014, at the age of 98. The second child of Edward Harman Cabaniss II and Marjorie Weatherly Cabaniss, he was born in Birmingham, AL, on January 21, 1916, and received degrees from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He married Mary Albritton of Andalusia, AL, on April 13, 1940, and joined the Army in September, 1941, where he served in World War II as a lieutenant with the 20th Combat Engineers Regiment in North Africa, Sicily, and Normandy. On his return, he worked at General Electric in Schenectady, NY, for 32 years, earning a dozen patents.

Ned was predeceased in 2001 by his wife of 61 years. He is survived by two sons (Edward Harman Cabaniss IV of Fairview, NC, and John Milner Cabaniss of Raleigh, NC), six granddaughters, and eleven great-grandchildren—and by his daughters-in-law and grandsons-in-law, to whom he was also father and grandfather. He was a sailor, reader, tinkerer, puzzler—and, quite simply, extraordinary.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Foreman Brown Funeral Home in Andalusia, AL. A graveside service will follow at Andalusia Memorial Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes comments and memories on the memorial website. Condolences rfhr.com

Dear Uncle Ned: Hope you find out that you really did correctly solve that puzzle you were always contemplating: If a hen and a half lays an egg and a half.............Love, Anne

To my dear Uncle Ned, family and friends, I will never forget that he was always "extraordinary" when asked how he was doing. To honor him, I too am adopting that phrase. It passed on joy to me from him and I hope I can pass it on to others. He truly was one of the best people I have ever known and always had time to really explain things to us. He will always be with me. Fay Bridges

Fay, I love that idea! I think I will adopt that phrase as well. Thanks for your kind words. Robin

To the Cabaniss Family- my sympathy to all of you who have lost such an extraordinary relative. He is my ideal of a true southern gentleman. He and my Mother spent a few years together and he was a saint to her through some tough times. We love him like our own father and we hope you find solice in the fact that he was so good to all. Not every good person dies young; some live to a wonderful age and continue to share their joy and kindness with many generations. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of you. Bonnie Nuss
