Obituary For Edward Harman Cabaniss
Edward "Ned" Harman Cabaniss III of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away on March 15, 2014, at the age of 98. The second child of Edward Harman Cabaniss II and Marjorie Weatherly Cabaniss, he was born in Birmingham, AL, on January 21, 1916, and received degrees from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He married Mary Albritton of Andalusia, AL, on April 13, 1940, and joined the Army in September, 1941, where he served in World War II as a lieutenant with the 20th Combat Engineers Regiment in North Africa, Sicily, and Normandy. On his return, he worked at General Electric in Schenectady, NY, for 32 years, earning a dozen patents.
Ned was predeceased in 2001 by his wife of 61 years. He is survived by two sons (Edward Harman Cabaniss IV of Fairview, NC, and John Milner Cabaniss of Raleigh, NC), six granddaughters, and eleven great-grandchildren—and by his daughters-in-law and grandsons-in-law, to whom he was also father and grandfather. He was a sailor, reader, tinkerer, puzzler—and, quite simply, extraordinary.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Foreman Brown Funeral Home in Andalusia, AL. A graveside service will follow at Andalusia Memorial Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes comments and memories on the memorial website. Condolences rfhr.com
