Obituary For Edmund Frank Armogida

Edmund “Ed” Frank Armogida was born on 4-4-44 in Canton, Ohio and passed away in Raleigh, NC on November 5, 2013. He came to North Carolina as a school teacher to facilitate the end of segregation in public schools. Teaching was his passion and many students of Carnage Middle and Sanderson High Schools, both in Raleigh, have never forgotten the ways Mr. Armogida touched their lives. He also coached football there for many years and loved the opportunity coaching gave him to reach even more students. Ed was a devoted member of St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Raleigh where his passion for teaching continued. He joyfully led many Bible studies and served his fellow parishioners in various ways. He took Bible study very seriously and was adamant about teaching the life of Christ. Ed was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his loving wife, Delores Armogida and their love for each other was evident until the very end. They would have celebrated their anniversary on November 6. He is also survived by his son, Nicholas Armogida; daughter-in-law, Candace and 4 grandchildren, Lathan, Jordyn, Cole and Jake Armogida. The children will always cherish the time they had with him and are especially thankful for a week-long trip to the Outer Banks in September, where some of their last memories were made. Additionally, he is survived by his daughter, Gabby Britt and her family. Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Edmund James and Mary Marcia Armogida. The Armogida family would love to hear your stories and memories during the visitation, which will be held at Renaissance Funeral Home on Sunday, November 10, 2013 from 7pm to 9pm, The funeral mass will take place at St. Raphael's Catholic Church on Monday, November 11, 2013 at 1pm. I first met Ed when my husband started teaching and coaching at Sanderson in 1972. Ed was his assistant as they coached JV football and track for many wonderful years. Sometimes my path would also cross his as a fellow social studies teacher, and again as our families grew with each of us gaining a baby girl. Ed was always genuinely interested in how everyone was doing. During the 8 years I was principal of Sanderson, I was able to see an excellent teacher at work. Ed was always patient, devoted, and compassionate in the classroom. If students had a schedule conflict, they never wanted to have to drop Mr. Armogida's speech class! Ed was also passionate about teaching as a profession. Committed to his students growth and development, Ed was a gem. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Mr. Armogida started a legend within a group of girls in the 1987 Sanderson Graduating class. That year, he created a speech contest in partnership with a local charity and whoever won the contest was to speak in front of the charity at their next meeting. My speech was about a Russian girl who immigrated to America and her trials and tribulations. I won the contest and was honored to speak in front of the charity group. The Russian girl's name, that I created, was Yanna Bratikovitch and even today all the girls from that class still sometimes call me Yanna Bratikovitch. To you Delores, Nicholas, Candace, Lathan, Jordyn, Cole, Jake, and Gabby, the family of Ed Armogid I send my sincere, heartfelt sympathy but as we mourn let us also rejoice knowing Ed fought the good fight, ran the good race and God has called him home to his reward which is eternal living in the peace, joy and love of God. I have known Ed for over 40 years. We lived in the same apartment complex when I moved to North Carolina. We both moved out of the complex but our paths crossed again when Ed came to Sanderson to teach and coach. It was at Sanderson that our friendship developed and grew. This is a friendship that I have always cherished. I was talking with Bob Catapano Wednesday morning after I heard of Ed's death. I told Bob that Ed's legacy is simply he was a "GOOD GUY". That can't be said of all of us but Ed truly was a good man, a good guy. I mean that in the highest way. Ed loved his family, loved his friends, and he loved the young men and women he taught and coached. I can truly say that one of God's great blessings in my life was the friendship of Ed Armogida. I had the pleasure of taking Mr. Armogida's Speech Class at Sanderson High School. I enjoyed his class immensely. He opened my eyes to so many ideas and challenged me to really understand why I believed a certain way. I have taken this strategy throughout my life and it has helped me to take a stand when needed. He was a truly gifted teacher and I am thankful I was able to share in his gift.

Our sympathies to all of the Armogida family at this time. Years ago when Ed and I and my brother played football together at Our Lady of Peace grade school, Ed held a record. He had the largest football helmet of anyone. He was a solid member of a championship football team. We enjoyed our time together. Victoria (she was a Rex) remembers the Armogida family who belonged to St Anthony's church. I am sure they were related.
