Douglas John Bachand (Bingo) was born in Royal Oak, Michigan on August 13, 1921 but grew up in Midland, MI. He is survived by his son, William F. Bachand of Sun Lakes, AZ and his daughters, Margo Teper of Ocala, Florida and Brenda B. Trapp of Raleigh, North Carolina. Douglas is also survived by his grandchildren, Ryan S. Bachand and Michelle Bachand Gill of Scottsdale, AZ, Marisa Kristin Trapp of Madison, Wisconsin, and Rene Marie Wade of Jacksonville, FL and step-granddaughter, Ann Marie Willingham of Portland, Oregon. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Harold Bachand of Clarkston, MI, and sister, Mable Ross of Hot Springs, Arkansas and numerous nieces and nephews.

Douglas served with distinction in the Army Air Corp as 1st lieutenant and pilot in the South Pacific during WWII. He graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked briefly for Firestone Tires and later joined Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan where he served for 35 years until retirement in 1986. His career with Ford Motor took him around the globe with long-term assignments in Brazil, Germany, and England. Upon retirement, Douglas moved with his wife, Helene, to Scottsdale, AZ. He became active in the clown unit of the Shriners and was building project manager for the new Phoenix Shrine Temple completed in 1989. In 2004, he moved to Chapel Hill, NC to join his daughter, and remained in North Carolina until the time of his passing. He is fondly remembered for his role as “Bingo” the clown in supporting the ongoing work of the Shriner’s Children Hospitals. Douglas will be interred at the Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, NC, Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at eleven o'clock in the morning.
