Obituary For Doris Binder Medlin

Doris Binder Medlin, 72, passed away Friday, March 13, 2020 in Raleigh,NC after a nearly 4-year battle with cancer.

She was born in Pigeon, MI, to the late Norman Binder and Elizabeth Brug Binder. She is survived by her son, Andy Medlin and his wife, Jolie of Raleigh; her sister, Jan Ottmer and husband Walt of Lynden, WA; and her grandchildren, Connor and Drew Medlin.

Doris grew up working on her parents’ farm in Michigan where she developed a life-long gardening hobby. She graduated from Michigan State University, went on to serve in the Peace Corp in Uganda, and moved to North Carolina in the 1970s. She began her career as a school teacher, one that continued until her retirement in 2005, and spent more than 20 years focused on remedial reading at Wake Forest Elementary.

In addition to gardening, she loved her cats, traveling, attending concerts, and enjoying nature.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to safehavenforcats.org where she used to volunteer.

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the family is holding a small, private graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh. They plan to hold a memorial service for friends and family later in the year when conditions allow. If you’d like to be informed of those future plans, email MemorialforDoris@gmail.com.

Hi Kenille. I looked for your contact info but only found an old number. She probably didn't share that her cognitive challenges had increased and one of the first things to go last spring/summer was some of her phone and email skills and the motivation to use them consistently. I know she appreciated your friendship over the years, and I still have fond memories of going to the Christmas Eve parties at your place.

I am so sorry to find out about Doris's death through the newspaper. I knew she was dealing with cancer but unanswered telephone calls did not help me understand what she has been dealing with these past months and years. I have a wonderful photograph of 4 of us getting ready to raft in West Virginia. I will keep this image as a memory of the way I remember her love of the outdoors as well as our many conversations about our kitty cats. Kenille Baumgardner

My condolences to the Medlin's during this time amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. I, too, have lost father on 17MAR2020 and I'm here to say that I cannot say that I know what you're going through as each of us grieve differently however, just know that you're all in my thoughts and prayers as I know that you too have been limited and restricted in the manner in which you can lay Doris to rest and allow others to pay their final respects. -Cal
