Obituary For Donald Lawrence Smith

Donald Lawrence Smith, beloved husband, father, brother and Grumpa, passed peacefully on September 12, 2022. Born in Kingston, NY., he is preceded in death by his parents Dolfis George And Elizabeth Josephine (Levis) Smith.

Don loved learning - whether it was jumping into beekeeping, taking up farming in his 50’s, or just reading about new technological developments happening in the world. He loved passing on his knowledge to others, especially his children and grandsons.

So much will be missed about Don - including his wicked sense of humor. Not many would sit on a toilet in their driveway, reading the paper after his morning run - for all the neighbors to see! He loved making our children laugh and teaching them how to enjoy life.

His most cherished challenge was walking the Camino de Santiago across Spain - 500 miles of beautiful scenery, quiet, and self-reflection. He shared his experience from this trip to almost everyone he met - he found it that rewarding.

Don is survived by his wife, Carol, his son Jason of Raleigh, and his daughter Cecilia, her husband Josh, and their sons Robert and Jackson, of Houston. Additionally, he is survived by his sister Karen, her husband Lance, and their daughters and grandchildren, all of Montana.

Following private services, a celebration gathering will be held for family and friends on Saturday, September 24th at 1:00 pm at the Clubhouse at Courtyards at Andrews Chapel, 1000 Havenwood Ln, Durham, NC

I worked with Don at Extreme Networks. I am saddened by his passing. He was a blessing to know and pleasure to work with.

I've had Don in my prayers daily along with others with cancer for a long time including in churches along the Camino. I'm so happy that he and Carol got to walk the Camino. I cherish the time the 4 of us sat down to dinner in the Village District to discuss the ins and outs of a Camino pilgrimage. I was hoping to contact Don soon to share our recent experience on the Camino Le Puy. He is much too young to be gone. My deepest sympathies to Carol and the family. To Don, I know you are enjoying walking heaven's Camino pilgrimage every day. Terry
