Obituary For Donald L. Stohler

Donald L. Stohler passed away peacefully in Raleigh, NC on December 17, 2017 after a brief illness. Don was born April 13, 1930 in Honey Creek, Indiana, to Ralph and Violet (Abshire) Stohler. His grandparents were Jacob and Bertha Agnes Abshire.

Don graduated from Sulphur Springs High School and then Ball State University with an MA degree. In 1952, he joined the Army. In 1953, he married Phyllis Laudenschlager, his wife for over 64 years.

After his years of service, he taught elementary school in Kokomo, Indiana at McKinley, Lincoln and Bon Air Schools. Don and Phyllis were active at Main Street United Methodist Church and Don belonged to Indiana State Teachers Association, Phi Delta Kappa, Kokomo Elks and Metropolitan Kiwanis.

In 1998, Don and Phyllis moved to Raleigh, NC where he joined Asbury United Methodist Church and continued his membership in the Elks. One of Don’s lifelong joys was being with his two daughters and their families, Ann Stohler Costello (Tim) of Austin, Texas, and their children, Amanda and Shane, and Mary Beth Stohler Grant (Wayne) of Raleigh, NC, and their children, Tyler and Ben, all surviving. Also surviving are a brother, David Stohler, and sister, Verlena White. Don was predeceased by brothers Quentin and Ermil Stohler.

A memorial service will be held in the sanctuary at Asbury United Methodist Church on December 29th, 2017 at 11 AM. Friends and family may gather at 10 AM for visitation. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Shepherd’s Table Soup Kitchen (Raleigh) www.shepherds-table.org or to Kokomo Rescue Mission www.kokomorescuemission.org or to a charity of your choice.
