Obituary For Deborah "Marla" White

Marla Uzzell White died peacefully with her children by her side at her home in Raleigh, NC, on March 26, 2018. Marla was 63 years young.

Deborah Marla Uzzell White is survived by her husband of 43 years, Dewey White; her daughter, Hayley Uzzell White; her son, Carson White; her brothers, Larry Uzzell and Michael Uzzel; sister-in-law, Gail Uzzell and many dear friends as living life and being kind was her hallmark. She was preceded in death by her mother, Josephine Riggs Uzzell and her father, Russell Uzzell of Onslow County, NC.

Deborah Marla Uzzell White was born on the blessed day of June 5, 1954 in Jacksonville, NC to Josephine and Russell Uzzell. She graduated from Jacksonville and pursued a career that spanned 40 years as a hairstylist- making life-long friends out of customers. She served our nation as a Navy wife living in states on each side of our great county. She married Dewey, her high school sweetheart, in 1976. After moving to Raleigh when Dewey’s Navy term was completed, Marla began working for herself as a hairstylist. Over the years the couple welcomed two children into their home. Hayley and Carson both graduated the great university of NC State. Marla then set about teaching her children the values of being honest, caring and not judgmental, traits she learned from her grandmother, Dolly Uzzell.

Marla was accomplished at the piano and crafts, but her great accomplishment was the love she shared. She and a group of great friends (Sandra Wright, Gail Uzzell, Pat Gory, Debra Denatale and her cousin Ginger Webb). They started a girls group, FBI’s, that met monthly for new adventures. Over the past 10 years they have had numerous remarkable times. Marla was a generous, witty and dedicated individual who loved living life and who was passionate about her profession only second to the love she held for her family and friends.

The world is a lesser place today as God now has by his side this most wonderful wife, best friend, mother, and caring person.

A celebration of her life is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. March 31, 2018 at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Road Raleigh, NC 27615, with a gathering to exchange the good times about Marla at the funeral home from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. I have not one specific memory, but several observations. I was a 34 year client of Marlas. We didnt socialize, but we were friends in that if I had called her and told her I needed her, she would have come right away. When I was in her office, she made me feel as if I was the most important person in her life for those two hours. MARLA was beautiful and she loved beauty. She was always dressed so stylishly when I came to her. She really cared about how I looked and her the highest complement I could give her was to tell her I got compliments on my hair. She remembered the names of all my family members and asked about them. Hair styling was not just a job for her- it was a calling. MARLA loved Dewey and their children intensely. I give my sincere condolences to Marlas loved ones. I will miss her and will always have a photo of her in my heart. Sharon Hartman

Dear Dewey, Carson & Hayley, I just learned of Marla's passing and my heart is broken for all who loved Marla. Marla has been my hair stylist for over 30 years. She was more than that. She was my friend, confidant, therapist and spirit lifter. She always had a joke to tell me and was wonderful at her delivery. She was always so upbeat, caring and positive--filled with fun and always ready to plan a party. Even over the last months when I knew she was in discomfort, she was always positive and talked about all the things she still could do and was planning on doing. Of course, over the years, she spoke so much of you all, that I feel I know you personally. She loved you all and was so proud of each of you. When she called me on Feb. 22nd to cancel my hair appointment because she "hadn't worked in two weeks", I knew that things must be bad. I'm so sorry that I missed her service, but she and you all have been in prayers for many months. I know she is in a better place and we will see her again. I will miss her smiling face and sweet spirit. With love, Danita Sullivan

Marla has spent the last 35 Years caring about my looks on a monthly basis. She always made her work look so easy, and she always had that big smile even when she was not feeling well. I dont think I have met a stronger woman than Marla and I will miss my visits with her. Our love goes out to Dewey, Hayley, and Carson.

I learned recently about Marla's passing and was deeply saddened. In case you don't remember me, I was one of her many decades-long clients, and I am also the one who brought you the black lab puppy to foster over 20 years ago. I'm sure you remember that :). I know she worked until she literally couldn't any more. I enjoyed hearing about her family during each appointment, and literally "hearing" the kids grow up. She loved her family very deeply. I will miss her greatly as a hair stylist, and a friend. Beth Levine

Dear Dewey, Larry and Mike. I just learned of Deborah's passing in the last few days. Although it has been many years I have fond memories of times spent together with all of you in Jacksonville and Wilmington. Deborah was always such a joyful positive person to be around. My thoughts are with all of you and the rest of her family at this time. Very sincerely, Tony Harris
