Obituary For David McMahon

David Christopher McMahon, 77, of Raleigh, North Carolina passed away peacefully on March 20, 2019 after a courageous battle with several health issues. He was born in Troy, New York on February 27, 1942 son of the late Emily E. McMahon (née O’Connell) and Col. Dennis John McMahon.

The son of a West Point graduate, David grew up all over the globe -- the McMahon’s were one of the first American families to live in Japan after WWII, and he had fond memories of living in Greece learning the language and culture. After attending three different high schools, he graduated in 1960 from Onondaga Valley High Academy in Syracuse, New York, where he met his wife of 55 years, Nancy.

David received a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Syracuse University and was a die hard Orangeman. He enjoyed a long and successful career working as an investment banker in Syracuse, NY; Tampa, FL; and Raleigh. In Tampa he worked at Exchange National Bank, served as President of the Florida Financial Analyst’s Society, and was a member of the Tampa Yacht and University Clubs. David moved to Raleigh in 1989 to work for BB&T -- in 2003 he retired as President and Chief Investment Officer at BB&T Asset Management. He loved to give his children annoying financial advice which they now fully appreciate. A nod to his coastal Irish heritage -- he was happiest near the water, loved a good party and a pint of Guinness. While living in Tampa he discovered a passion for sailing and had many entertaining adventures on the family’s Coronado 27’ sailboat.

In retirement, David continued to serve on the board of BB&T Investment Services which gave the McMahon’s the opportunity to visit many parts of the United States. David and Nancy loved to explore new locales -- as active members of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh, David and Nancy enjoyed traveling to Italy with the church group. Others trips included Ireland with the Syracuse Alumni Association. He served as a Rear Commander and held multiple offices (local, district and national) with the United States Power Squadron (America’s Boating Club of Raleigh). Personal interests included watching college sports (he adopted the NC State Wolfpack in addition to following his beloved Orangemen), sailing in New Bern, NC and connecting with high school friends and family via social media.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, Dennis and Bill.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy, and their four children; Elizabeth McMahon Stearns (Brenan), Mary Alice, Julie McMahon Grenz (Al), David Paul McMahon (Kasey Cecchini); and five grandchildren, Anna, Maggie, John, Ethan, and Ava. He is also survived by his sister, Emily McMahon Naum (Steve) and cousin, Judy Murphy Casey (Sherman), and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass and visitation will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Thursday, April 4, 2019 at 1:00 pm with a visitation one hour prior. Burial to follow at Historic Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Catholic Parish Outreach or Coast Guard Foundation. https://coastguardfoundation.org/ways-to-give/donate-directly http://www.cporaleigh.org/donor.html

Our condolences to Nancy and the whole McMahon family. Dave was a lifelong friend from OVA High School in Syracuse. He was always upbeat and a lot of fun and he never lost the prize for being the coolest guy in the room. He will be missed but never forgotten. Ken & Jeanne Bowles
