Obituary For David Gerard Kuehr-McLaren

David Kuehr-McLaren, 60 of Apex, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2023.

David was born April 22, 1962 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended Holy Spirit grade school and Warren Central High School. He earned his degree in Computer Science with a minor in Theater from Indiana University in 1987. He worked for IBM for 32 years, and most recently held the title of Senior Security Architect. Over the course of his career, he was named Inventor on more than 19 security patents in the US and abroad.

David was an avid amateur magician with a passion for the theater, and enjoyed collecting magic tricks, stamps, pint glasses, figurines, coasters, and board games that he could share with his family. He was a proud volunteer at each of his five childrens’ schools, as well as their scout troops and swim teams. His love for travel brought him to five continents and dozens of countries where he took hundreds of photos, mostly of lamp posts. He joined the St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church parish early in its establishment.

David was the son of the late Raymond and Patricia Kuehr. His life will forever be cherished in the lives of his children Mabel, Henry, Rose, Alice, and Grace Kuehr-McLaren. He is survived by his six siblings Jeanne Ann Lausten, Rosanne Bordenkecher (Steve), Steven Kuehr (Stephanie), Jeffrey Kuehr (Laurel), Kevin Kuehr (Kathleen), and Geralyn Koehler (Mike). He is also survived by his former wife, Isabel McLaren, as well as a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, neighbors and friends.

The Catholic Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 12, at St. Mary Magdalene followed by a celebration of life at Apex Senior Center, 63 Hunter St, Apex, NC 27502 on the first floor. This will take place immediately following the service and conclude at 2:30pm.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests a donation in his name to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

    I first met David when he was a co-op at IBM working on NetView with me. He was part of our regular lunch crew who joked with each other daily, and I miss that. David was a true friend. We drifted apart as our jobs changed, but we would still chat online from time to time and last got together for a lunch a few years ago before the covid pandemic. I found out about David's passing this morning, and I am saddened and stunned. It was a great pleasure to know and be friends with David. I will miss him. My sincere condolences to David's family. RIP David, you were top-notch.

    I met David (DKM) through IBM when he was engaged to assist with a project. What a professional and interesting man - that was my first impression. He really knows his stuff. Funny note: DKM was on a video call with a customer and I had to laugh as the lighting was coming from behind him so to everyone on the call, he looked like he was in witness protection. I took a picture and sent it to him as his fellow IBMers thought it was the best demo by an unknown named person ever! David is appreciated by so many at IBM.     My memories with David were from Grade school, Junior High and High School. We shared similar school activities and we all hung out together. From age 19 and on we lost touch and that's on me. As I read his achievements as an employee of IBM, as a husband and father and as a person, I am proud to have known him.     Some of my earliest memories are of David. He always said he didn't remember, but we rode in the same carpool to Kindergarten and blew kisses to each other before going in the classroom. The first time my mother let me walk by me self was to his birthday party. We went to different grade schools, but met up again at Woodview Junior high and remained good friends through high school ( choir and drama ) and college ( he started with me at Purdue). My heart is broken.
