David L Byrd passed away from pancreatic cancer on Tuesday, May 12, 2015. He was 66 years young. He lived life to the fullest and will always be remembered for his eagerness to help anyone, his sense of humor, his many stories of adventures and his ability to connect with everyone he met. He has touched the lives of so many individuals. There is now a hole in the universe that he once filled.
He was the husband of Lois Hankins and the superhero dad of Brittany Paige Byrd and Caitlin Nicole Byrd.
A celebration of his life is planned for Sunday, May 17,2015 at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Road Raleigh NC at 3:00 pm with visitation following.
This will be an opportunity to share some of the many stories of his life. If you would like to share a memory at the celebration or leave a written memory for the family it would be very much appreciated. No flowers please.
The Raleigh walk for Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is Saturday, May 16, 2015. Donations can be made to Byrd’s Team at PurpleStride.Kintera.org/RaleighDurham/Byrd. Condolences: rfhr.com

We are so sorry to hear about David's passing. We will always remember him as a kind and caring neighbor with a jovial, booming voice that emanated friendliness. He never failed to wave and say "hello" ~ and give our dogs an affectionate scratching over the fence between our yards. Several years ago, when we called an ambulance for Maria's father (we thought he was having a heart attack), David was the only neighbor who came to our front door to see if everything was okay. We will miss his presence and wish his family the comfort of fond memories and peace. ~ Mark & Maria Schurtman

Thinking of you all always!
My favorite story has to do with an All You Can Eat Prime Rib Night at Ramada Inn. Will (my brother) took a bite of his prime rib and declared that it was spoiled. There the drama began. He ofcourse made a big deal about how awful it was, and Byrd ofcourse was right there to comissurate, what out for him, and try it (even though Will repeatedly said how awful it was). Byrd tried it anyway and declared it spoiled also. He got louder and louder and called the manager over telling him the meat was bad, etc. It was a hilarious scene to watch if you know how Byrd was when he got worked up and knew he was right no matter what. The manager explained that the meat was not bad, it was just 'aged' beef. Byrd was standing at this point and proclaimed, so that the whole restaurant could hear, "That he had tasted 'aged' beef from all over the world, and this was not aged beef." My dad turned to him and said, "Oh really David, How's the beef in Bangladesh." This rendered Byrd speechless, which never happens, and then we all burst out laughing. I still cry with laughter when I think about it. Recently I was at a restaurant in Miami that had 'aged' beef on the menu, and I had to send a pic of the menu to my dad. He sent the email to David also. It never gets old. I still laugh everytime I think of that story. Good memories 🙂

Although we did not see each other very often, coming to North Carolina and getting into mischief will always be one of my favorite childhood memories. David was the second oldest of the Byrd nieces and nephews - a good looking, fun-loving older cousin. He grew into a wonderful brother for both Larry and Karen, and someone who loved his family very much. Deepest sympathy to all of you who are missing him.
