Obituary For Curtis Edward Schweitzer

Curtis Edward Schweitzer, D.D.S., of Raleigh, NC, died on April 7, 2019 from cancer. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on March 13, 1946, the son of the late Dean Curtis and Martha Jennings Schweitzer.

In 1969 Curtis attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. After which, he moved to Richmond, Virginia and attended the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University earning the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery. Curtis then joined the U.S. Army where he achieved the rank of Captain. While serving he attended the Academy of Health Sciences completing the Medical Department Officer Course. After an honorable discharge, Curtis moved his family to Raleigh where he began practicing dentistry before eventually opening his own practice where he continued to educate and improve himself as a dentist. He was an outstanding member of the community, held in high regard. During his career he enjoyed such honors as a fellowship at the American College of Dentistry, serving as the President and Program Chairman for Raleigh-Wake County Dental Society and President of the Fourth District Dental Society.

Curtis is survived by his former wife of twenty-two years, Patricia Schweitzer. As well as their three children, Kimberly Hubbard, Laura Royer and Michael Schweitzer; and eight grandchildren Nickolas and Mason Hubbard, William, Natalie and Ella Royer and Felicity, Nathan and Allison Schweitzer. He is also survived by three siblings, Barbara Schweitzer, Linda Ledbetter and Patti Towns.

In addition to his passion for dentistry, Curtis also had a passion for woodworking, cooking, and the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. These pursuits took him to places as far away as Guatemala and North Dakota, but his heart belonged to North Carolina where he would often hunt at his beloved lodge, affectionately named the Hyde County Hilton, and fish along the coast and in the sound surrounding the Outer Banks. He led a rich life full of love and happiness and will be missed by many.

A wake for Curtis will be held at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six forks Rd., Raleigh, NC 27615 on Friday, April 12, 2019 from 6:00p.m - 8:00p.m. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, 2209 Fairview Rd., Raleigh, NC 27608.

    Dear family and friends, I am late learning of the passing of Curtis Schweitzer. I went in for my dental appointment and as I was telling the girls how wonderful he was, they told me he had left us. I was so sorry to hear that. I (also) had Dr. Schweitzer as a dentist for over 30 years and he was absolutely the best. He was one of the few people that I trusted 100% and we all know there are not many of those anywhere. Your online video of the photos of Dr. Schweitzer was especially touching. From the looks of them he mustve had a huge chest freezer! Those were some sizable swans, dolphin and sailfish! He was quite a photographer, it looks like, with his camera around his neck, documenting the prizes! I love seeing the way he meticulously laid out all the fish on the dock; a beautiful presentation. He definitely had a life well lived and a wonderful family that it looks like he enjoyed immensely. Teresa Daniels

    Dr Schweitzer was a Great Man. He was one of a kind and loved and respected by everyone he met. He loved dentistry and his work showed it. Wonderful person to work for and his staff loved him dearly. His first love was his family. He looked forward to the beach trip every summer as they were all together. Fishing and hunting were his other passions and enjoyed that time with his great friends and son Michael. He loved his Laura and Kim. He lived a full well rounded life and touched the lives of so many. He will add alot of love to Heaven. Hes the lucky one but Ill miss him terribly. I know I will see him again.

    Dr. Switzer was the kindest most compassionate person I have ever met! He did all my dental work completely free as a professional courtesy and also for my relatives complete reconstruction of their mouths I was so heartbroken when I found that he was leaving the practice there will never be another Doctor Schweitzer or anyone like him he will be missed greatly by many people

    Dr Schweitzer was the kindest dentist I've ever known and worked for. Before this, I was convinced that all dentists were insensitive to the hardships endured by the common working individual. He understood the difficulties a single parent encountered. He cared about the welfare of his employees as if they were his own family. Dr Schweitzer truly had genuine compassion. These are only a few of the reasons he was and always will be a very special person. We love you Dr S!
