Wilfred Michael “Mike” Shea loved Myrtle, his wife of 63 years, and would often ask his children with sincere wonder throughout their marriage and after her death, “How did I get so lucky as to marry your mother?” Mike loved his children, grandchildren, and all his extended family. He loved the men and friends he fought alongside in the Korean War. He loved his Yokefellow prison partners and the inmates they visited weekly whom he referred to as, “his boys.” He loved N.C. State – his cross country and track teammates, the runners he coached there, the students he taught, and his decades-long co-workers and gym buddies. He loved the younger athletes he coached too: runners at Cardinal Gibbons High School and summer swimmers at Oak Park and Springdale. He loved his fellow Legion of Mary members, fellow Our Lady of Lourdes parishioners, and he loved his friends and Raleigh neighbors.
But most of all, Mike loved God and was deeply devoted to his Roman Catholic faith. He would like nothing better than for the announcement of his death to bring his loved ones – and anyone – to the celebration of the Holy Mass. He believed in the life-changing and life-giving power of the Mass and would have found immense joy if you were to continue to attend after his funeral. While there, know that you are welcome to step into the Adoration Chapel, a special place of prayer, where Mike spent hundreds of hours. So, please, come to Mass at noon (which follows praying of the rosary at 11:30 a.m.) on Saturday, November 2, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Raleigh. A reception in the Lourdes’ Fallon Center will immediately follow. Mike’s burial will be Monday, November 4, at 11 a.m. at Raleigh Memorial Park on Glenwood Avenue. God bless.

Sr. Mary and the Shea family I am sorry for the loss of your Dad. May he rest in eternal peace. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I was unable to attend the beautiful "Celebration of Life" Mass by Fr. Kenneth Oguzie on-site but streamed it on youtube. Annalea Celio

Mr. And Mrs. Shea were our back fence neighbors since 1997. They always had a kind word when we would pass each other walking in the neighborhood and it wasn't unusual to see Mr. Shea on his bicycle somewhere clear on the other side of Raleigh! I remember seeing him biking or walking to church at Lourdes in his suit all the time. Only later with my current company that renovated Reynolds Colosseum which includes the NC State Athletic Hall of Fame, did I realize what a great coach and family legacy he built with NC State track. He was a devout Wolfpacker as long as I've known him and always teased me about my ECU Pirates, yet always with a smile and a twinkle in his eye. We will miss Mr. and Mrs. Shea while remembering them fondly and send our respect and condolences to all the family. RIP

Dear Mary and the entire Shea family, I have so many fond memories of your dad, starting from when I was in grade school at Our Lady of Lourdes. He and your mom always made your home so welcoming. Randy enjoyed many sports conversations over the years about N.C. State and Major League Baseball. His devotion to the Catholic faith was evident in all he did. He will be greatly missed. With much love and prayers, Anita and Randy

Mr. Shea was my swim coach at Oak Park in the early 70s. I'm almost 65 now but I will never forget his dedication and kindness in those early days. My condolences to his survivors. How fortunate you were to have him for as long as you did! -Sue (Jacobs) Veasey, Southern Pines, NC

He was my first and only swim coach. He rallied over a hundred kids to swim for him on Oak Park Club's first swim team. I have wonderful memories of those days regardless of how much I hated swimming laps. To Julie and his family, thank you for sharing him with us.

Mike Shea is one of the finest men that I have met in my life. He was always an outstanding example of living his faith, going the extra mile as he taught his students, being a friend to all and never wasting any of the precious resources that he was blessed with. I love Mike and his wonderful family. He has been one of the most precious blessing in my life. Larry Brown

Mike was a true legend at NC State and his figure became as well known as the Memorial Belltower in the 1970's and early 80's. When I first arrived as a young professor at the university my running buddy and I hardly passed a day without seeing Mike or one of the Shea kids running somewhere at some time of the day or early evening. We will never know how many trails the Shea family literally tramped into existence as they traversed the campus and nearby properties. Mike was unfailingly gracious to everyone and it was not uncommon to see people stop whatever they were doing to wave as he ran by. It was rumored so frequently that it became part of his lore - that Mike did not own a car and insisted on his own foot power as transportation. We basked in the elevation of our women's Cross Country program under Coach Shea, along with with his daughters, Julie and Mary and Betty Springs. Our present three-consecutive NCAA Women's Championship in Cross County had its beginnings with Coach Shea (followed by the future legendary coaches Rollie Geiger and Laurie Henes); we are forever grateful. You lifted us up, Mike, and now it is your turn to be lifted up. "A kind heart he hath. A woman would run through fire and water for such a kind heart."
