Obituary For Charlotte K. Howard

Charlotte Kuchler Howard of Raleigh passed away peacefully at Rex Hospital on October 12, 2017 after a brave and hard-fought battle with cancer.

“Charlie” was born on March 21, 1948 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Eula Elizabeth Turner and Julien Edward Kuchler, Jr. She was preceded in death by her sister, Laura Irene Kuchler. Her husband, Thomas Clay Howard, was born in Dunn to Kenneth Felton Howard, Jr. ("Pete") and Melvarene Johnson Howard Adair. In 1992, Charlie and Thomas were married at The Howard House, the former family home. Charlie graduated from Bass High School in Atlanta. She attended Stetson University in DeLand, Florida and earned a degree in music therapy at Georgia Tech. In 2014, she turned her love of treasure hunting into her own business and opened “Simply Charlotte’s” in Vintage Village in Raleigh. She filled her shop with interesting and unique items and quickly gained a loyal following of customers. Simply Charlotte's is now being run by her friends and family. Charlie imparted her love of music and talent for playing the clarinet to her grandson, Thomas Peters, who is currently a drum major for the NC State University Marching Band. A lifelong fan of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Charlie’s family delighted in hearing her sing “Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech.” She loved her family dearly and lived her life with courage and a quiet determination. She will be missed for her quick wit, easygoing nature and thoughtfulness toward others. Charlie is survived by her husband of twenty-five years, Thomas Clay Howard; her son, Jonathan Walter Peters; her daughter, Laura Elizabeth Peters; a grandson Thomas Keith Peters; her brother-in-law, Kenneth Bartlett Howard (Martha), all of Raleigh; special friends Harry Gober of Atlanta, Georgia and Holly Bennett of Wake Forest, North Carolina.

Services to honor Charlie’s life will be held soon in Sandy Springs, Georgia at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to the Wakefield HS Band Boosters, 2200 Wakefield Pines Drive, Raleigh, NC 27614.
