Obituary For Charles Edward Atwell

***Due to the State of Emergency declared by the State of North Carolina in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Atwell family is opting to stream the service online-the link to the live-feed is below.***

Charles Edward Atwell, Jr, 73, of Raleigh, N.C., passed away on Friday, March 6, 2020. Charlie was born on March 26, 1946 in Annapolis, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Edward Atwell Sr and Dorothy Walker Atwell.

Charlie spent four years in the Air Force working as a dental hygienist. He retired from IBM where he had worked in administrative and facility management positions. With the early onset of cardiovascular disease, Charlie found few resources for support so he started his own cardiac support groups both in Maryland and in Raleigh that are still in operation today. He became a leader in Mended Hearts for the Washington D.C. chapter. He helped lead the Cardiac Support Group at the Duke Center for Living for a number of years prior to his death. Charlie had the unique ability to make everyone feel special because he genuinely cared about them.

Besides his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Gary Atwell, and his granddaughter, Heather Yvonne Atwell. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Joan Atwell, of Raleigh, North Carolina, children: Robyn Denise Tavel of Falling Waters, West Virginia and Celeste Yvonne Atwell of Marbury, Maryland, six grandchildren and six great- grandchildren and siblings: Robert Atwell of Jacksonville, North Carolina, James Atwell of Annapolis, Maryland, and Elaine O’Connor of Royal Palm Beach, Florida.

A private funeral service will be held at Renaissance Funeral Home, on September 30th at 3:00. The service will be streamed on our youtube channel here: CLICK HERE to view the funeral.
