Obituary For Carle Galen Cayton
Carle G. “Buddy” Cayton SR of Raleigh, North Carolina passed away June 18, 2018 at the age of 74. He was preceded in death by his parents the Reverend Lonnie E. Cayton and Geneva Meekins and his older brother Michael Cayton.
Buddy grew up in Raleigh and attended Needham B. Broughton High School (NBHS). He was a member of NBHS Varsity football team in 1959, 1960, 1961 and starting halfback in 1960 and 1961. In 1961, as tri-captain, the team won the State 4A championship with an 11-1 record. Buddy was the second leading rusher and scorer and was named All-Conference, All-State and All-American halfback. For the 1961 State High School East/West All Star football game, Buddy served as captain and starting halfback of the East team.
Buddy and his high school friends have gone to Ocean Isle every Fall for 33 years to play golf, reminisce about their glory days with a fair amount of embellishment added each year. The 1961 State Football Championship was a favorite memory with highlights of Buddy’s run through the line and over the defensive backs. His high school friends remember him being as tough as they come and still talk about his high stepping power run. Buddy went on to receive his undergraduate degree in Education from Campbell University and his graduate degree in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His first teaching and coaching position was in Wilson, North Carolina at Fike HS in 1969. Winning followed Buddy that year; Fike football team won the 4A State Championship for the 2nd year in a row and he married the love of his life, Pamela Musselwhite. Buddy returned to Raleigh in 1973 where he taught and coached at his Alma Mater, Broughton HS. Over the next 35 years he taught at Athens HS and taught and coached at Apex HS. He was a beloved teacher and many students viewed him as a friend and mentor. He was more than just a teacher, a former student recently said “He was a father figure to so many kids who passed through the halls of Apex High School and those that played at Apex Parks and Rec department. He understood kids and rallied for them”. Buddy continued teaching until his retirement in 2004.
After his retirement Buddy volunteered at Wake Med Cardiac Rehab center for 12 years. He also enjoyed monthly lunches with his Broughton HS friends. In addition to teaching and football, Buddy’s passions extended to drawing, traveling with his family and spending time at the beach with his beautiful wife. He leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Pamela, three children Robyn (Tom) Walton, Candice (Jeff) Morin Carle “BJ” (Tina) Cayton JR, brother E. Gene Cayton, brothers-in-law Wayne (Jo) Musselwhite, Jimmy Musselwhite, Chris Musselwhite and 10 grandchildren along with his nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Buddy and I attended Daniels and Broughton together. We played football, or rather he did, while I sat on the bench. Later, we were at Campbell, and we drove to Raleigh on weekends in my TR3. I could share Buddy stories with you all day long., But one I heard recently you probably do not know. One of Buddy's coaching positions was at Wilson Fike where one of his assignments was the golf team. The team had a match at the New Bern Country Club with New Bern High School. When the team van drove up to the entrance to the club Buddy said, " You fellows go on in and I'll pick you up here in about two hours". When he picked them up one golfer asked, "Coach, why didn't you go in with us?" Buddy relied, "Several years ago I was at the club swimming pool and I broke a diving board. I never paid them for it and I was afraid if I went in there they'd try to collect." I can honestly say, like many of you who knew him and had the honor to be on the field with him, II loved him like a brother. Chuck Manooch

So sorry for your loss. I was fortunate enough to meet and spend time with Pam and Buddy in Wilmington. He was such a kind man. I will never forget how he took an interest in my daughter and helped teach her how to draw. Drawing became a passion of hers that summer. He was such a kind soul.

Dear Pam, BJ, and family- So many nice memories while we were neighbors and our boys were growing up together! Thanks to Buddy for making the beautiful Garden Club Yard of the Month sign - his artistic touch! Thanks to Pam for the beautiful baby wreath on our front door when our daughter was born and for being her nurse in the Wake Med nursery. Thanks to Buddy for getting up in the middle of the night to go turn off the iron I had left on before going to the beach (whew!). Thanks for the cheering at all the boys' soccer games. Although we have not seen each other since we moved to Texas, Buddy will be missed. Pam and BJ our thoughts are with you. Our very best to you, Lou and Robin

We moved to Gordon St when I was 6. The Caytons lived in the apartments across the street. Our sports seasons were played at Browns Field, in the street and behind the apartments. Buddy was/is my hero. I modeled the way I played the game of football after the way Buddy played. We were great friends and it was painful to learn of his passing. My sincere condolences go out to his entire family. There will never be a replacement, but we all have the memories of a great, kind, and creative man that we can hold on to until we are called home to glory to join Buddy. Tom Johnson

I grew up in the same neighborhood with Buddy and attended the same schools. He was always kind to me and helped me through some hard times. Cindy and I pray for his wonderful family. May God bless you and give us peace and understanding.

Going to miss you Coach C. You always called me son. You always wanted the best for your players on and off the field. I remember that summer in 1989 I saw you at the baseball field in Apex and you said, "hi son how are you doing." I told you I just graduated for college. And I remember to this day you went in your pockets and gave me a $100 bill and said congratulation. That spoke volumes about you coach. You touched so many young peoples lives. Love you man. Be at Peace.
