Obituary For Carla Denise Lucas

Ms. Carla Denise Lucas, age 55, of Durham, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2023. She was born May 12, 1968 to the late Lonnie Sharrod Lucas, Sr. and Lucy (Mayo) Lucas. She attended Southwest Edgecombe High School and was a graduate of NC Central University, where she earned a Master's degree.

Carla was a truck driver from January 2020 to January 2022. She was so proud to be a female truck driver, and she thoroughly enjoyed her freedom of being out on the open road.

Carla served her country honorably in the U.S. Army, and continued to be engaged and active in her community after leaving the Army. Some of her accolades listed here come directly from people that she worked with in her community. To her colleagues at Combat Female Veterans Families United, she will always be remembered as a sister-in-arms, comrade, and member of the family. Carla provided a tender strength that was demonstrated through her ability to empower, encourage and support other sheroes who depended on her to show up and be present. She always came with love, kindness, laughter, and a shoulder to lean on despite that she was enthralled in her own personal battle. Carla embodied a true sense of loyalty, duty, respect, honor, integrity and personal courage that she gave freely and openly to her fellow sheroes.

Carla joined Sisters Network Triangle NC in January 2022, and volunteered at several outreach events and was always enthusiastic and upbeat. Carla also joined the American Legion Post 540, "NC First ALL Female Post," in 2015. She was elected to be the Sergeant of Arms in 2017. At every election, it was known by all that there would be no replacing her as Sergeant of Arms. Carla would smile and accept the position each year. The doors to the post will never be the same.

A Memorial Service will be held at Renaissance Funeral Home on Thursday, October 12, 2023 at 10:00 AM.

Carla's family welcomes any flower arrangements or donations in her honor. Flower arrangements may be delivered to Renaissance Funeral Home no later than 4:00 pm the day before the service. Donations may be made to the family's CashApp, $NotYours77.

Just heard of Carla's passing. I met her when I joined Post #540. Such a sweet person. She was looking forward to getting back in that truck and had plans to purchase a home. Glad she is no longer in pain. Honored to have met her. Tresa Dula-Sultan

Judy so sorry to hear about Carla. She was such a bright light in this world. Her caring spirit and beautiful smile will be greatly missed. I had the honor and pleasure of getting to know Ms Lucy as a member of Sisters Network Triangle. She loved her family. I met Carla while she was attending NCCU and working with Mrs. Wadeeah Beyah we had some fun times. I got to reconnect with her when she got diagnosed and joined our group. We talked often and still she had a great spirit. I can hear her mother singing her into the pearly gates. Know that my prayers are with you and the family. Just know I'm here if you need me. Cousin Neicey, I thank God for you and the times we talked, laughed, and reminisced about our parents being loving playful siblings! Look.. I was listening to the recording just 2 days again when my Dad (James Mayo Jr.) called your Mom and sang happy birthday to her and Uncle Luther!! Thank you for shining your light into my life through your smile which lit up a room in person and over the phone! I love you! I know I will see you again when we meet in the air! 1 Thessalonians 4:13-28 Cousin Vivian Mayo
