Obituary For Bruce John Spaulding

Bruce Spaulding, age 73, of Raleigh, North Carolina died on July 25, 2017 from complications following a heart attack. Bruce was born in Ithaca, New York to the late John Francis and Doris Marie Buchanan Spaulding. His family was the greatest love of his life.

He was proud of his career in the U.S. Navy, and enjoyed volunteering at his grandchildren’s school. He loved to read and often got lost in his books. Bruce graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1968. He later attended Johns Hopkins University and Catholic University and obtained Master’s of Science in physics and engineering. He enjoyed a long career that included being a teacher, a sailor, and he retired as a combat systems engineer, though his favorite job was being a Grandpa. Bruce is survived by and will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 20 years, Nancy; children, Lesley (John), Thomas, Andrew (Marissa), Jeff S., Jennifer (Dustin), Jeffrey K. (Sherry); nephew, Trevor (Caroline) and grandchildren, William, Cecelia, Kristina, Kyle, Destiny, Avianna, Benjamin, Gabriella, Jonathan, J.D., Morgan, Nolan and grand nephew Ian. He is preceded by his parents and his first wife, Cecelia “Perk” Hofmeister and by his sister, Donna Spaulding.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Rd. Raleigh, NC at 2:00 p.m. The burial and graveside service will take place at Columbia Memorial Park, in Clarksville, MD, on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.

When Bruce's nephew married my niece some years ago, he was a gracious host for the rehearsal dinner. My family was not part of the rehearsal but had driven some distance to attend the wedding the next day. Bruce warmly included us in his dinner invitation, greeting us, introducing us to other diners, and making sure we were comfortable. My first thought was to talk about his booming voice and his appetite for red meat, but on reflection I would say that all of my memories of Bruce share a common thread. He was a kind and congenial man who wanted, and was able to understand a wide variety of subjects. I am glad that I knew him. Carroll Nunn
