Bridget “Breda” Philomena O’Connell Wiggs of Raleigh, NC, died peacefully at home on September 9, 2019, following a courageous 6-year battle with leiomyosarcoma. She was born in Cork City, Ireland, on January 23, 1944, the daughter of the late Jeremiah and Mary O’Connell.

Breda raised 3 children, was actively involved in her church community, and was particularly devoted to faith-based outreach and community service. In addition, she was a well respected and much-loved employee of Easter Seals/UCP, and retired in 2011.

Breda is survived by her husband, Bob; daughters, Maura and Erin (Scott); son, Patrick (Erika); grandchildren, Ava and Phineas; siblings, John, Kathleen, Patricia, Jeremiah, Maura, James, and Liam; beloved nieces and nephews; and an incredible support system of loving friends.

Farewell, dearest Breda. We were privileged beyond words to know you and to love you, and to be inspired by your singular example of faith, hope, and charity that shone so brilliantly in everything you said and did. Just being with you was a blessing to be savored and cherished, one that we always wished would not have to end. Not an unkind word did we ever hear you speak about anyone. Nor can we remember you ever talking about yourself, such was your selflessness and your interest in others that captivated us and drew us inexorably towards you. Who can ever forget the joy that flowed from your heart and radiated from your beautiful countenance, your constant equanimity in thick and thin, or your lovely, gentle humor that warmed and enthralled those around you? May the good Lord whom you served so faithfully and devotedly shower you with the infinite joy of His presence in His eternal home that is now also yours. To dear Bob, Maura, Erin, and Patrick, and all your extended family, may you be consoled and indeed strengthened in the passing of your beloved wife and mother. Her palpable goodness and kindness brightened this world while she was with us and her powerful example of Christian faith and devotion will forever inspire us on our journey to our Father. With our love, thoughts, and prayers ...

Auntie Breda, you were like no other in this world. A shining light to us all, a symbol of warmth and welcome. I will be forever grateful and privileged to have known you. And it is with such a deep sense of loss that we acknowledge your passing. Though our paths crossed all too rarely, I take with me so many lessons from the way you lived your life, the happiness you brought to all around you, and the amazing family that you leave behind. To all in NC, we stand with you here in Ireland, proud of everything we have shared. Look after each other and know that we are thinking of you at the this very difficult time. Sending all our thoughts and love. Auntie Breda, may you rest in peace. Love Raymond

I have some great memories of visiting the Bob and Breda and family at their home in Raleigh in the 70's with my brother David. I'm so sorry to hear of Breda's passing but I know she had a fulfilling and wonderful life. Thinking of the family, John Price

Mom was the most loving, selfless, and joyful person I have ever known. How I miss her. A great light in this world has been extinguished.
