Obituary For Barbara Anne Russell Thomas

Barbara Anne Russell Thomas was ushered into the loving arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 13, 2025, at home, surrounded by her beloved family. A native of Asheboro, North Carolina, she was the eldest daughter of the late Elizabeth Hammond Russell. She was also preceded in death by her cherished husband, Edwin Scott Thomas, Sr. MD.

Barbara is survived by her sister, Judy McKague of Asheboro; her daughters, Beth Tripp (Raymond) and Susan Worley (Brian); and her son, Scott Thomas Jr. (Jenny). She was a proud Nana to five grandchildren: Noah Tripp (Maggie), Anna Tripp, Rebekah Worley Mason (Rob), Hannah Worley, and Katie Worley Roebuck (Matt), as well as four great-grandchildren: Lila Roebuck, Graham Roebuck, Abigail Mason, and Lennon Tripp.

A passionate educator, Barbara obtained her BA degree in Early Childhood Education from the Women’s College in Greensboro. In the 1960s, she taught second grade in Asheboro and later in Chapel Hill at Franklin Street School. She was a loving and dedicated homemaker, supporting her husband, Scott, as he built a thriving medical practice in Cary, N C. Together, they made many memories serving their community, playing and watching tennis, and especially many family beach trips to Wrightsville and Corolla Beach.

Barbara’s greatest joy in life was her beloved husband, Scott. They were high school sweethearts who met in the 8th grade. They shared a lifelong devotion to God, each other, and their family. Her deep love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was evident in her every action, and she poured her heart into nurturing them in love and faith.

Barbara’s life was defined by her unwavering commitment to God’s Word and prayer. As a young girl, she knelt in front of the TV during a televised Billy Graham Crusade, recognizing her need for a Lord and Savior. Over the years, Barbara and Scott were active members of Providence Church and Treasuring Christ Church in Raleigh. Her involvement in Bible Study Fellowship and as a teacher of Prayer Life were key influences of her spiritual journey. Barbara’s true passion was teaching women to pray and feasting on the goodness of God’s Word. She loved hosting Bible studies in her home and encouraging others to walk with Christ.

Barbara was best known to her family as a prayer warrior, coming to God for help, guidance, and wisdom. She often reminded her loved ones, "We are just sheep in need of a Savior,” and saying in the faith “We should never get older than a two-year-old” but should daily walk humbly and dependently on the Lord.

The family wishes to thank Agatha for her loving care and the compassionate support provided by Transitions Life Care during her last days.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Treasuring Christ Church, 3700 Lake Wheeler Rd. Raleigh, NC 27603.

Barbara’s life will be forever remembered by her legacy of love, faith, and devotion to God.

Friends are invited to visit with the family at 1 PM on Saturday, March 1st at Providence Church, 6339 Glenwood Ave. Raleigh, NC with a service following at 2 PM.

Barbara and Scott frequented my business at Stonehenge Market for many years. We enjoyed their ever pleasant and friendly ways. Beth, we attended St Timothy's together and I easily recall seeing our mom's sitting in the bleachers at ball games. She loved sharing about what you and siblings and grandchildren were up to. I know she will be greatly missed. I rejoice that she is in her heavenly spreading joy as she did so well. Beverly Smith

I did the teaching ministry of John Piper with Barbara in her home for 12 years. She is a very special lady and I am sure will be missed by her family and friends. Fran Ball
