Obituary For Barbara Ann Reynolds Spangler Bailey

Barbara Ann Reynolds Spangler Bailey, 79, a loving servant to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 21, 2018. She was born in Albermarle, North Carolina to the late Joseph and Edna Reynolds. She was a loving Mother, Spouse, Grandmother, friend, and nurse who showed everyone she encountered the love of Jesus by her service and ministry to them.

She was a long-term member of Bay Leaf Baptist Church and Celebration Family Church. She attended Bay Leaf Baptist Church until 1998 when, after the passing of her first husband, she joined Celebration Family Church where she faithfully attended until her health made it impossible to do so regularly. Barbara faithfully ministered to others through her involvement with various women’s ministries in her church and as a leader in Bible Study Fellowship, Acteens, and the Women’s Missionary Union.

Over her lifetime, she was blessed by the friendship of Don and Pat Walston and many wonderful women including Gretchen Roe and Michelle Wright as well as the “Sweet Magnolias” (Mary England, Pam Cardozo, and Donna Gray) who, despite her failing memory, continued to love her and visited her regularly even when she was not able to recall the full measure of their friendship.

During her lifetime, she worked off and on outside the home based on the needs of her family. She earned her Associate Degree from Louisburg College and Diploma in Nursing from Watts School of Nursing. As a nurse, she served in roles in the Neonatal ICU at UNC Memorial Hospital, in psychiatric research at Dorothea Dix Hospital, and as the Unit Nurse Director for the adolescent psychiatry unit at John Umstead Hospital. For many years, she stepped away from nursing to work as a Real Estate Broker with Howard Perry & Walston. Later in life, she returned to bedside nursing working supplemental at WakeMed on the 3B Cardio-Thoracic Intermediate Care unit where she loved working with the staff and patients. When remembering her time on 3B, she often remarked that she loved the staff and patients so much, she would have worked for free. After the death of her first husband, she worked supplemental for the physician practices of Carolina Cardiothoracic Surgery, Carolina Cardiovascular, and Specialists in Plastic Surgery before retiring from nursing. She was always intentional in choosing professions that served others and used those roles to demonstrate Jesus’ love.

She is survived by her children, Angela Spangler Cummings (Mike), Michele Spangler Lineback, Scott Spangler (Kathy) of Wake Forest, NC, Michele Bailey Lyerly (Chris) of Newland, NC and former daughter-in-love, Carol Spangler of Raleigh, NC; sister, Sonja Schmidt (Jerry) of Richmond, Virginia; brother, Rayvon McLeod of Asheboro, NC; grandchildren, Justin Shover (Chelsea), Braden Shover, Averie Lineback, Cameron Lineback, and Sabrynn Lineback all of Wake Forest, NC; Nick Cummings of Richmond, Virginia; Kelly Cummings Guzouskis (Ryan) of Youngsville, NC; Graham Shover, Tucker Cummings (Carley), Victoria Spangler and Gabeigh Spangler all of Raleigh, NC; Daisy Lyerly, June Lyerly and Wren Lyerly all of Newland, NC; Great-grandchildren, Bradley Wood of Jessup, Georgia, Katelyn Cummings of Richmond, Virginia, and Charlie Guzouskis and Corey Brody of Youngsville, NC.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband Garland Spangler, second husband Mike Bailey, and grandson, Benjamin Cummings.

The family wishes to thank caregivers Lottie Harris, Shirley Harris, Edona Memini and Saine Memini for their tireless devotion to Barbara’s every need. The family would also like to thank Transitions Hospice for their loving, dedicated care. They were our families’ confidants and encouragers and we are eternally grateful.

A celebration of life will be held at Bay Leaf Baptist Church, 12200 Bay Leaf Baptist Church Road, Raleigh, North Carolina at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 27, 2018. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends in the fellowship hall from 10:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. A burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Barbara Spangler Bailey’s memory to Transitions Hospice, Celebration Family Church, or Bay Leaf Baptist Church.
