Obituary For Anne Teresa Simpson Locke

Anne Teresa Simpson Locke of Raleigh NC, age 91, died on Thursday, January 19, 2023, at UNC Rex Hospital with family members at her side. Anne was born in Washington, DC to the late William Francis Simpson, Sr. and Anita Teresa (Orlando) Simpson. Anne attended public schools in Washington, D.C. and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1953 with a degree in Early Childhood Education. She was a member of Beta Phi Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, and she was elected Senior Class Historian for the Class of 1953.

After graduation, Anne taught kindergarten before marrying Robert “Bob” Randolph Locke in 1954, and together they began raising their family in Rockville, Maryland. The family moved to Raleigh in 1965 when Bob’s employer, IBM, began operations in the Research Triangle Park.

Anne liked to bowl and play tennis. Later she liked watching broadcasts of these sports along with broadcasts of golf, baseball, college basketball, and Olympic sports. It was advisable not to interrupt Anne when she was watching broadcasts of the Masters Golf tournament or Wimbledon Tennis tournament.

Anne had a keen, yet subtle sense of humor which she perfected in her youth by ‘sparring’ with her older brothers. Delivered with a straight face, recipients were sometimes taken aback, until the true nature of her jokes were revealed by the addition of a slight smile, a raised eyebrow, or the slow deliberate wink of an eye.

In addition to her time teaching Kindergarten, Anne’s career path also included managing FairLanes Bowling Centers in Raleigh and Cary North Carolina, working for EDS (Electronic Data Systems) on the North Carolina State Health Plan, and later traveling throughout the State of North Carolina giving seminars to health care providers on various aspects of billing for services provided through the Medicaid programs. Anne enjoyed traveling with her family on summer trips to Stone Harbor, New Jersey, and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The Family also made annual trips to Washington DC to reunite with Anne’s brothers and their families, and her cousins. Later Anne took cruises and visited Puerto Rico. In 2000 Anne went on a Pilgrimage to Rome, Italy with one of her daughters. Anne’s last big trip was to visit Guatemala in 2002.

Anne’s final career move was working as receptionist in the office of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Raleigh. Anne also volunteered as a Eucharistic Minister, Secretary of the Parish Council, and bookkeeper for the Children of God Mission in Guatemala which supports a school for 200 indigenous (Mayan) girls. An avid student of history and a genealogist, Anne read the newspaper every day, and had a constant backlog of books being read or waiting to be read. Anne was a member of Caswell-Nash Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), where she was editor of the Chapter’s newsletter for 12 years. Anne was also a member of the Captain Johnston Blakeley Chapter of the United States Daughters of 1812, where she served as President and Historian of the Chapter and State Veterans Services Representative. Anne was also a member of both the Maryland Historical Society and the Maryland Genealogical Society.

Anne was preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years, Robert “Bob” Randolph Locke, Sr., her parents, and her older brothers Dr. William Francis Simpson, Jr., and his wife Rose (Romero), and Philip Anthony Simpson and his wife Barbara (Sullivan). Anne is survived by her children, Robert Randolph “Randy” Locke, Jr. (Pamela) of Raleigh; Susan Locke Clifton (Douglas) of Topsail Island, North Carolina; Elizabeth “Liz” Locke Schimmel (Richard) of Rowlett, Texas; George Francis Locke (Lottie) of Raleigh; and William Paul Locke of Raleigh, 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2718 Overbrook Drive, Raleigh, NC 27708 on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at 12 Noon with visitation being from 11:00 am to 12 Noon. Family and friends will attend her Inurnment at the church’s Columbarium immediately following the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Church in support of 'The Children of God Ministry' or to your favorite charity.
