Obituary For Anne Marie Hakenewerth

Dr. Anne Marie Hakenewerth, née Kuensting, died January 17, 2019 as the result of a tragic car accident. Anne is the beloved wife of 41 years to Paul Andrew Hakenewerth, beloved mother of Katherine (Peter) Sweeney and Mary (Tristan) Luse; beloved grandmother of Zachary Sweeney, Michael Sweeney, and Caroline Luse; and beloved sister of Mary (Ron) Buren, Frank (Jeane) Kuensting, Steven (Laura) Kuensting, and Jane Frank (Mike Sable). She was born to Francis and Agnes Kuensting on August 4, 1956 in Jefferson City, MO.

Anne loved science and learning. She started her career as a teacher and then moved into technology and lab work. Along the way she discovered that her passion was solving big problems, with big data, but to do the work she wanted, she realized she needed to become an epidemiologist. So, in her 50s, she went back to school at UNC Chapel Hill to earn her PhD. She may have taken the long route but once she decided what she really wanted to do, she made it happen. After graduation she worked for the Texas Cancer Registry, then returned to NC to manage the Surveillance Systems Unit at the NC Division of Public Health. Her journey was an inspiration to many.

Anne filled her life to the brim. She was an active parishioner at St. Luke the Evangelist in Raleigh. She loved to travel and volunteer. She was involved with many social groups. She always made time for family and friends and neighbors, and was a mentor to many people she worked with. She profoundly impacted everyone who knew her.

Visitation for Anne will be at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Rd., Raleigh on Monday, January 21, 4–8 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church in Raleigh on Tuesday, January 22 at 11 am with a reception to follow.

If you would like to make a donation in Anne's name, the family has suggested a couple of her favorite charities.

My Dear Anne, i will forever hold on to the memories from the NC ECHO project. Thanks for your leadership and also the late afternoon encouragement sessions. On this earth, you made a difference in people lives, even those who wake up each morning giving praise to our Father, and not really knowing it was you our Father used to uplift their spirits and soul. Go on and enjoy eternity. I will see you again. Love Pamela Morris.

To Anne's family - I had the privilege to work with Anne in New York City at the Health Department about 10 years ago. She was such a great pleasure to work with, in addition to being so smart and dedicated to public health. She is a huge loss, and my thoughts are with you all and her many friends during this difficult time. I hope that some peace can be found in beautiful memories of Anne. In sadness and with love, Cari

Anne was a delightful friend who will be much missed and long remembered. Ed and I are deeply shocked and saddened at her sudden passing but recall how much fun we had together. We enjoyed getting to know her and her husband Paul (and their family too) through Team Trivia nights and other neighborhood gatherings. Anne was also a wonderful volunteer, assisting Kathy in 18th-century period dress at the Open House events of the Joel Lane Museum House, and helping Ed with his refugee resettlement work by teaching English. The world has lost a truly gifted and giving individual. We send our condolences to all her family.

I knew Anne only for the past couple of years through our neighborhood. I liked her the instant I met her. I found her to be one of the most down-to-earth, engaging, pleasant yet incredibly interesting people I had ever met, and I was so looking forward to getting to know her better. I am stunned and heartsick that she is gone so suddenly. My deepest condolences to her grieving family and all her many friends. I pray that Gods peace can be with you during this devastating time.
