Obituary For Angelo Roland Simpson

Angelo Simpson was born in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda on June 28, 1943 and grew up on Factory Rd. This is an important detail because this is where folks lived who were associated with the sugar factory. His father, Rowland Simpson worked there after arriving from what was then known as British Guiana in the 1930s. He was hired by an uncle, Denzel Cort, who was in charge of the coveted sugar boiler positions at the factory. Rowland also brought his mother, Nora Simpson (neé Cort), to Antigua. Angelo was raised by his mother, Albertine Simpson (neé Sainte Claire), who was born in Guadeloupe, and who was supported by many hands including Jane Gould.

So from the start Angelo’s family was spread out with aunts and uncles, cousins and siblings on different islands and in Guyana. Angelo added to the mix when he moved to New York in the late 1960s. New York is where he married Sheila Simpson (neé Brown), and where he became an Engineer as a proud CUNY graduate.

He and Sheila then complicated the map even more by moving to Toronto in the 1970s. This is where his daughters Sheryl-Ann Simpson and Monique Simpson Oliver were born. Sheila’s mother Ernestine/Nellie Brown (neé Abbott), Mrs B. as he always called her, also moved to Toronto along with many of Sheila’s siblings. So with all of them, their spouses and children who moved and where born there, Angelo found himself surrounded by family in Toronto as well.

In Toronto, Angelo worked, usually behind the scenes, to support community organizing ranging from his church to non-profit organizations. He continued his career, earning an MBA from Western University. Angelo and Sheila also took advantage of everything Toronto had to offer to give their daughters a truly rich childhood. Angelo also used them as an excuse for more travel, this time exploring sites across his new home in Canada.

In a final move to Raleigh, North Carolina, Angelo continued his work to leave things better than he found them. For example, by creating space and opportunities for young Black engineers where those opportunities weren’t being created by the company.

Raleigh is also where he became a father-in-law when Monique married Jerry Oliver, and where he took on his most prized role as grandfather to Frazier (The Young Man) and Weston (The Dribbler). There’s no real way to explain the joy they brought into his life. Throughout all of this moving he also managed to stay connected to a group of friends who go back to his time at Antigua Grammar School and working at PanAm Airlines, along with his brothers. They talked books and politics, the old days, the future, and of course cricket. They checked in on, and supported each other throughout the years.

Angelo’s death on June 7, 2022 was sudden, which means the spot missing him now is harder to understand. But what is clear is that he lived a good life filled with curiosity, travel and love, and he will be missed deeply.

I am just now realizing the news of Angelo's passing. I was one of those young, Black, Engineers whose lives he touched, shaped, and molded. I learned so much from him. He taught me how to sell ideas and become a more strategic thinker. Because of his encouragement and support, I earned my MBA from Duke University. As a result of his support, I find myself thinking of him often and what he did for me and others. He will forever hold a place in my heart.

Dear Sheila and family, It's been many many years since I saw you and Angelo. I met Angelo when we worked at Jerrold Electronics in the mid to late 70's. Angelo was always so kind and caring to me, as I was new to Canada, from Jamaica. I've often thought of him over the years, and Wayne and I would always speak highly of him. So just tonight we were reminiscing about him, and Wayne looked him up and we discovered that he'd passed. Our sincerest condolences to you Sheila and all your family. May the Lord be your strength and guide in these days going forward. Much love, Angie Schleifer-Rabey

Sheila I had the privilege of working with Angelo in the late eighties and we even went for a baseball game with him and his two girls, Jack Pompeo and his two daughters and me and our two boys. A thorough gentleman; learnt a lot about ensuring fair resolution of conflicts in an organization

Angelo and I go back to the early 80's when he first joined Nortel. He was a very smart and trustworthy individual and a very good friend. He will certainly be missed by all who ever got to know him. May the Lord almighty rest his soul in peace; in the highest of places in heaven and give solace to the bereaved family !! So long Angelo; till we meet again!

I will always remember the very first time I met Angelo Simpson at a family get together at their Etobicoke home in Canada in 1991. I was introduced to both Sheila and Angelo by my forever love and partner Edison Browne. Angelo and Sheila greeted me with a friendly smile and hearty welcome. What struck me most about Angelo was his height and slim body and how handy he was around the kitchen helping his wife Sheila prepared and served dinner and clean up and still find time to joke and play with Sheryl-Ann and Monique. Angelo was indeed a loving and caring husband to Sheila and dad to Sheryl-Ann and Monique and Grand pa to Frazer, and Weston. My deepest condolences to Sheila and the girls, all the Simpson families, son-in-law Jerry, brothers and sisters, nephews and nieces, cousins, sister-in-laws, and brother-in-laws and friends near and far. Angelo you are gone but not forgotten. You were a man of peace and quiet. Rest In Peace. For those who die in Christ shall rise again this is the hope your family and all your love ones have. You will be missed but the memories remain forever. Condolences are sent to the Simpson family from Blondel, Ashakie, Yanita and baby Carmelo.

Our hearts maybe broken and our spirits weighted down with grief but we'll rejoice and be greatfull for the time we had him. Weeping may endure for night, but joy cometh in the morning. Uncle Angelo, when I was growing up, I always look forward to your visits. You were what I called a gentle giant, towering over us. You were always speaking words of wisdom which I will keep close to my heart for the rest of my life. To my Aunt Sheila, cousins, Sheryl-Ann and Monique, I will be praying hard and will be here for you. Love, Cousin Eugene

  • June 13, 2022

My sincerest and heartfelt condolences to Sheila and the other family members. The news of Angelo's death brought back some very painful memories of 19 years ago when I had to deal with Victor's illness and subsequent death. During that time both Sheila and Angelo were always there with words of encouragement, comfort and advice. Although words cannot adequately express how I feel I would like you to be comforted with words from Matthew 5:4 - "blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted". Please also know that my loving thoughts embrace you and your family at this difficult time. May the soul of Angelo rest in peace and rise in glory. The Lord is close to the broken hearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

Dear Cousin Sheila and the rest of the family, Please accept our deepest condolences on the passing of your dear husband, father and grandfather Angelo. In the earlier years I would have met you both on your visits to Trinidad in the earlier years. Angelo and I would sit and talk. As recent as last week, I quoted an anecdote, which he shared with me years ago. We pray that God will give you all, His comfort, grace, strength and peace as you reflect on Angelo's legacy. Yours sincerely, Earl, Cheryl-Ann, Kwesi, Kareem, Malika and Walker.

  • June 13, 2022

Dearest Shiela, Sheryl-Ann, and Monique, There's not a lot I can say about the late Angelo Simpson. I did not know him well enough to speak about who he was and all he did. So my words today are for you. It is my hope that as Angelo closed his eyes in this life that he awoke to see 'heaven's morning break and earth's vain shadows flee'. Those last words are not mine originally but they capture exactly what I hope happened. And if I can continue borrowing from the hymn Abide with Me, I hope that the tears you shed will lack bitterness and that, despite Angelo's death, you, who still live, will triumph still. My deepest condolences to all of you and know that you are in my thoughts. Donellis

A giant of a man Never failing to soothe Giving advice worth hearing Excellent orator Loyal family man Offering love and respect to everyone. Angelo Simpson, you were a giant of a man, a family man in every way. Time can never erase your character. Your good will live on and not interred with your bones. Your quiet strength, your dauntless quest for justice is just part of your legacy. Wisdom knocked at your door and you responded to her joyfully. However, you did not embrace her for yourself, but shared with those you met along the way. Your kindness and generosity of spirit will walk the halls of time with those you have left behind And those unborn. Family, friends and well wishers, weep not for him, But find him everywhere. In music and its rhythm In quiet solitude. In long walks in the snow or bright summer days. In the slamming of the door And stirring leaves outside. He is not gone, he merely sleeps Although his voice is still If you listen carefully, He whispers peace and love Your guardian angel watches on Each day until we meet him again. R.I.P Angelo June 12,2022 Valerie and Family. Let us not

  • June 12, 2022

Dear Sheila, Sheryl-Ann and Monique, I hurt for you and with you at the passing of Angelo. His piecing eyes, deep voice and gentle spirit is indelibly etched in my memory. As you face the loss of your husband/father remember the words of the scriptures; But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 The world has lost a great man. But our lives are in God's hands. We do not always understand His ways, but we are certain that He makes no mistakes. It is natural to weep and to ask why. The patriarch Job when he had lost everything, to include his ten children exclaimed, "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away; blessed be the name of the Lord." So, keep trusting, keep believing, God is your refuge and strength.

Rosemary Valerie Brown-Browne To the Family of Angelo Simpson: Angelo was very jovial person who always saw the optimistic side; very quiet, very well informed. I always thought I KNEW until I sat down to have a conversation with him. He always saw the humour and we laughed a lot. He would tease me about my choice of coffee. Oh Angelo, I can still hear that deep quiet voice admonishing about my choices. He was not afraid of challenges or to share his great knowledge. If I can describe Angelo in two words they are QUIET GIANT as he was not only tall but giantic in spirit, mind and soul. Rest in peace my beloved brother in-law, mentor, friend. The love and respect I have for you will never fade. You were the proudest Father to Monique and Sherylann. You were an even prouder grandfather. To Shiela, Sherylann, Monique, Jerry and the Boys you have lost an invaluable treasure but have gained a Guardian Angel 😇.May light perpetual shine upon him. Rest in peace and rise in Glory.

To: Sheila, SA and Monique, Words cannot express the full extent of your loss, but I do hope your collective memories of your husband and father will sustain you at this time and into the future. Angelo stood tall as an outstanding role model for all that is good and grest in Black men. He was not only successful professionally, but impacted ours through his service to other, especially his family. It is often the ordinary moments of someone's life you notice, such as Angleo doing the dishes while listening to his beloved Blue Hays on the radio. There are countless moments and memories that together we all collectively share of Angelo. And, so at this difficult time, we can also take solace in those memories. I hope and pray as you remember your father and life partner, you protect and cherish all the everyday moments of Angleo's life, so he may continue to live on in your memories.

Thanks to the family for sharing this space where I can tell you how sorry I am for your loss of someone I dubbed a true family man. We could not have a better example of a Black family than the one that Angelo shared with his wife and children. I know when man has done his best angels can't do better. May God continues to bless this family

It is with a very sad heart I am extending condolences to Sheila, Sheryl-Ann, Monique, her husband and sons. Please accept my sympathy for the passing of your husband, father, father inlaw and Grand dad. Angelo is one of the best man I had ever met. I don't think I could find one person who had the chance of meeting him, could say one negative thing about him. Just after I got the sad news, I thought about his 2 grandsons and said that I am sure they were very fond of their grand dad. Matthew 5: 4 says... Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted. So, mourn for as long as it will take you to do so. May his soul rest in eternal peace. From Lenroy (Smiley) Browne.
