Obituary For Alexander Plavocos

Alex Plavocos lived a full and joyous life, defined by his devotion to family, his generosity of spirit, and his desire to make the world a better place. The son of first-generation Greek immigrants, Alex carried the lessons of legacy, hard work, and gratitude for life’s many blessings with him always.

On February 1, 2025, Alex passed away peacefully with his loving wife Judy by his side. Theirs was a love story that spanned decades, beginning in high school in Syracuse, N.Y., continuing through college, and culminating in a marriage that stood as an inspiration to all who knew them.

With a keen, inquisitive mind focused on problem-solving, Alex was at the forefront of the digital revolution. He earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the State University of New York at Potsdam in 1969, followed by a master’s degree from the University of Dayton. His successful career in the software industry spanned both large conglomerates and small start-ups, with roles ranging from software developer to marketing executive. He retired from SAS in 2015.

Alex’s greatest joy was his family. A devoted husband, father, brother, uncle and Papou, he delighted in bringing loved ones together. With his signature spreadsheets in hand, he orchestrated big, boisterous gatherings, making sure everyone had a bed to sleep in, food to eat, and fun activities in which to engage and connect.

Alex’s generous spirit extended far beyond his own family. His door was always open to those in need – whether offering a place to stay, a listening ear, or thoughtful counsel. Endlessly patient, he was a trusted confidant who remained steady and perceptive, even in times of crisis. He also dedicated himself to his community, serving as church council president for Good Shepherd Church of Raleigh, N.C., and providing comfort to those facing hardship as a Stephen Minister. Always a good Samaritan, he quietly lent a helping hand to neighbors, whether through HOA leadership or small but meaningful acts of kindness.

Alex’s happiest moments included cheering on the Syracuse Orange and his granddaughter’s soccer games, canoeing on Falls Lake, dancing at big fat Greek weddings, double scoops of ice cream and movie dates with Judy.

Over more than five decades together, Alex and Judy built a life filled with love, laughter, faith and resilience. Their journey took them from New York to Ohio, New Jersey, and North Carolina, forming lifelong friendships at every stop along the way.

Alex’s legacy lives on through his children, Adam Plavocos (Michelle) and Alison Brenton (Brett) and grandchildren Olivia Brenton, Sienna Brenton, Ana Plavocos and Tyler Potter. He is survived by his beloved wife Judy, brother Spencer Plavocos (Marie), and 13 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Sutter Plavocos and Stella (Papageorge) Plavocos, and brother George Plavocos.

In lieu of flowers, a gift in Alex’s memory can be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in the name of Alexander Plavocos.

A Memorial Service and reception will be held March 1 at 11 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 7000 Creedmoor Road, Raleigh, NC 27613.
